Gary Fisher 1.25" Stem??

Howdy!

I just bought a nice used MTB, and am now playing around with it for better fit...anways:

It's an old Gary Fisher Mt Tam MTB.

The steer tube seems to be 1.25" in diameter, is that possible?

Are new stems available for 1.25" steer tubes? I'm looking for a shorter stem with the removeable front plate..

-Or will i have to keep an eye on e-bay etc for a NOS one.

Threadless, integrated headset.

Thanks!

EDIT: adding i tried searching the MTB and this forum with no luck as far as specs' go. I also tried checking Gary Fisher web site, and the included original owners manual. No luck.

Remember to search for "1 1/4" as well. Fractional is often used together with decimal.

Yes. This was the Gary Fisher Evolution headset. A good friend of mine worked for Gary Fisher back in the day and this was one of his projects. My friend had a run of mountain bikes produced in Taiwan under his own name (Stevenson) and many had 1 1/4" headsets. This was about 1995. My son raced one of these and the last time we bought a headset for it was a Cane Creek (or the former name of Cane Creek which I can't recall now). You may be able to find 1 1/4" components still.

Thanks folks!

I don't have a caliper, so very helpfull & I measure 1 1/4" with a ruler (not the best I know).

Gives me a starting point at least.

The Bike Gallery (LBS's), recon they might be able to find some new downhill stems in 1 1/4. They also recommend bringing in the stem to double check size (vy good LBS).

--The search function gets really funky with numbers. For example 1 1/4 searches pop up everything with "1" etc etc. Thanks though!

I suspect that "1/4" together with "stem" would be enough. The "1" doesn't help in this case.

I may still have a 1-1/4" stem around here somewhere.........probably on the short (80-100mm)side.....I'll look around. Let me know if you're interested.

+1 on Portland's Bike Gallery.
