I tried lubing up the area but it hasn't helped. For some reason the pedal area of my bike still persists in squeeking when I take it out for a ride. I plan on taking it into the bike shop for a tune up soon anyway, but I would like to fix this if I could before then.

You might have to grease the contact points of your crankset. Meaning you should grease the threads of the pedals and the crank arms where they come in contact with the bottom bracket spindle. This should alleviate the squeak if it's coming from that area. The problem is that tubing resonates sounds so that squeak could be coming from anywhere on the bike.

hmm, after doing some reading it is apparent that WD-40 isn't a good bicycle lubricant so it looks like I need to make a trip to the store, and I will try those areas later tomorrow. If it works I will be a very happy... and less noisy camper.

You don't say whether you're using clipless pedals, but if you are, the first place to check is your cleats. Loose or worn cleats are the common culprits (WAG: about 80%) when people report mysterious squeaks and creaks from their pedals or cranks.

By that response it is safe to assume you don't have them. But, clipless pedals are pedals which have a mechanism that locks onto a cleat on the bottom of the shoe. The shoes are specially made for this purpose. These pedals require no clips (hence clipless) and straps.
