He killed a german shepard in a neighborhood up against the hills. He isn't considered a threat to the public at this time, but if you are out riding alone in those hills (especially at night as some people discussed doing a GMR night ride), be careful.

I saw a bear in Duarte a few weeks ago just strolling through someone's yard. Lions and tigers and bears, oh my.

If you see lions and tigers, call the LA Zoo! Don't tell my wife, as I climbed Angeles Crest myself last month and probably shouldn't have.

Well, a bear I'm not as concerned with. I'd pass out if I came across one, but I doubt those animals will bother a cyclist. However, mountain lions are likely starving right now given that it is so dry up in the mountains. This is forcing them to come closer to humans in a search for food. That is why that dog was killed. A few years ago a starving lion killed one mountain biker and badly injured another in Whittier, so it is not unheard of that a lone cyclist could be attacked.

That's not funny, Joy. You're going to start hysteria about Peacocks and their poop, which may incite angry mobs to injure those little animals. They have enough stacked against them seeing as how they make bizarre noises and are butt ugly unless they spread their tails. They don't deserve this.

I know how it is to be picked on for being butt ugly unless I spread my tail, so this is a very senstive topic for me. And, no, like the peacocks, my poop is not projectile.

But like peacocks, you DO make very loud noises at the crack of dawn. Which may be why people pick on you.

Remember, they were here first, before all these developments sprouted up. I am a little surprised to read the "not being a threat to humans" part. In Ventura County (Simi Valley, really), they shoot the animals first and then they determine whether it's threatening or not. No joke, it happened by the 23 fwy a few years back...

Oh, I agree with you. It's heartbreaking when they kill one of these cats. But, unfortunately, if one eats a human, it is likely to do it again and then it does become a threat. We have encroached horribly on their natural habitat, and I imagine that cat was starving, which is why it came down and attacked the dog. But when I heard this on the news today, they said that "at this time, this lion is not considered a threat to the public." They then went on to warn the public that they should keep small children indoors at dusk and at night, which is when these animals typically feed.

It's fertilizer for the lawn. Why do you think there are so many peacocks in Arcadia near the arboretum???

Nothing new about mountain lions and bears being seen in residential areas...esp after the wild fires. They are looking for food. As long as people keep invading/expanding, build homes and businesses, and there's a demand to develop those areas that wild animals consider part of their hunting territory, the more confrontations will occur. Where can these animals move to? or be relocated to? A lot of cities like the idea of more tax income...but at what cost? Although deer sightings are rare, the mountain lions are one of natures ways of controlling their population...and deer can and will spread diseases among the human population. Besides, the big cats are going extinct and every one that is killed just takes another one out of the gene pool for that species.

Next time you head up to the mountains or hills to hike or ride, just remember it's a home to other animals that may or may not look at you as prey or food, as rare as that occurs...but is played up in the news when it happens. Then there is usually a panic to buy and carry guns afterwards by people that are better served just to call animal control.

I don't think that the media played this up all that much this morning in the least. It was a very short report that simply warned people to keep their children and pets indoors after hours. There was no hysteria attached to it at all. But people do need to realize that these animals are suffering due to the drought and fires and may come closer to humans in a search for food.

I hope my thread doesn't seem hysterical as it's not meant to be. I'm merely warning folks that this attack ocurred so that if they are out riding alone in that area, they can be alert. Certainly, no one needs to carry a gun, and I doubt any of the weight weenies on here are going to add the lbs. a gun weighs to their bikes anyway.
