stuck links
raced a great cross race today, but my derailleur kept on clunking around.
came home, and discovered that the problem was a stiff link. My regular tricks didn't work. Any ideas?
It's a shimano ultegra 10-speed chain, so I'd prefer to rescue it rather than scrap it--it's pretty new and has seen fair upkeep. There's what looks like a bit of scoring on the top of the stiff link which I'm guessing may have been caused by shifting under load.

You may be able to get away with remove just the one link, or replacing the link.

DieselDan: I'd rather not cut the chain, a) because the replacement pin costs, and because of my chains that have failed, they have failed at the replacement pin.
mudpie: that would be my regular trick, plus the link-adjustment on my chain-breaker. Didn't do much.
dr.raleigh: haven't tried that one.

The more of this I read, the more I like my old 7-speed and SRAM chains. I had a similar problem and just removed the bad link, and the chain hasn't failed.

screwdriver didn't work out so well, so I went for the same idea with more leverage. Not really a great idea, as I managed to warp the outer plates a bit--but not enough to noticeably affect shifting (yet).
went back at it with the "chain loosening" part of the chain breaker, and what do you know, it worked perfectly.
