Toe strap buttons - correct installation?

Toe strap buttons - correct installation?
Where should to strap buttons like the ones pictured below be placed on the strap? Do they go at the very end, or just south of the buckle to prevent the strap from moving too much?

Interesting how toe clips seem to have already become an historical artifact and people are unfamiliar with their use.

Also, mine have a large opening on one side and a small on the other (it tapers). I take it the large part is where I feed the strap in?
