Power measurement for VO2 testing

Hello,

If performing submaximal VO2 testing, is it necessary to have a stationary bike with the ability to measure watts, or can you get a valid test with constant cadence and then increasing the resistance, much like the graded exercise test on a treadmill? Anyone have any experience with this issue?
