This would be cool in states/localities with laws allowing carrying of a non-concealed firearm.

I could see a market for a cycling friendly sling, maybe something adapted from a messenger bag's system.

It is no different than seeing a rifle or shotgun in the back window of a pickup truck.

I can see the "Felon in possession of a firearm" charge, but "Carrying a firearm in a public place" is a crime? WTH?

People nowadays scare much too easily, I swear. Next thing you know, there'll be shrieking panic when someone gets caught cutting his steak with a knife.

When I was a teenager, way back in the 70s, I was the captain of my Civil Air Patrol Rifle Team. We practiced every Saturday morning at a range about 5 miles from my house. I would ride there on my 10-speed in full fatigues, with my .22 strapped across my back, and a couple of boxes of shells in my pocket. I did have enough of a clue to remove the bolt from the rifle, but only someone who knows something about firearms would have noticed that.

I did that for well over a year and nobody stopped my or said a thing about it. This was in Colorado Springs, which has a high military concentration, but I was a 16 year old kid on a bike!

In Minnesota you need a carry permit to carry, open or concealed. I think the actual text of the charge is mangled but even if she wasn't a felon, she would have been guilty of a misdemeanor, felony if 2nd or more time.

You could probably do the same thing with a paintball gun or air rifle. Nearly the same threat to motorists, but without the need for a firearms license!

If you're not a felon then you can transport a cased/enclosed firearm on foot, on a bicycle, in your car, in your boat. You just have to know the rules for firearms for where you are at. The article doesn't say if the shotgun was encased or not, but it sounds like maybe it was just flung over her shoulder with a sling, and with her apparently being a felon and having a current warrent for her arrest then who knows what her motives were.

But this is a bicycle site and I discuss firearms on firearms sites, so I'm out of this thread.

Sure and back when I was a kid I took my scout knife to school and showed it off... that would get you expelled today.

Of course back in the day we used to board airplanes without any inspection of luggage what so ever.... not even a question and answer session at the gate.

That's ridiculous. A steak knife is a tool, not a weapon. In prison, they use pencils and pens as weapons, should we take those away from the kids also? Better remove all shoelaces also, don't want any 10 year old walking around and strangling people.

About 50 years ago, my older brother & I carried a 22 across the handlebars on our way out to the gravel pit to shoot. He was 13 & I was 10!

The fact the woman was carrying it at night, with "no LEGITIMATE particular place to go" may have raised more than normal suspicion.
If my gun club wasn't so far away, I'd be tempted!

It is ridiculous - it's what happens when you get moral panic about violence in goods and local/central governments pass kneejerk dopey laws/guidelines. All knives are weapons -> any weapons carrying in schools is a problem -> all kids carrying weapons must be expelled/suspended = some girl gets slammed for eating with a steak knife.

There was another kid I vaguely remember reading about caught in a similar trap when he wore a kilt with a small ceremonial knife to a school prom. OK, it's not allowed, but taking away the principal's leeway to give an appropriate response meant that the kid got expelled for something that wasn't violent or malicious (but probably was a bit dim).

In Oregon the officers would need something other than the weapon to conduct a stop on these facts. They could conceivably have driven along side and said something like "mind if we talk?" Even then it might be a stop. It's only a crime to CONCEAL a dangerous weapon in Oregon.

In Jr. High I remember vividly being attacked with fists and knees. The knee dropped me instantly. So perhaps we should not permit children to go to school with hands or knees as they are obviously potent weapons.

When I add the BOB I can take half a dozen firearms with me. I cycle to the range a lot in the summer. I remember riding past a fellow in front of his apartment building. His jaw was literally hanging open as he stared at me while I worked my way up the hill past him.

I suppose, like the ability to legally wear clothing.

It's legal in all 50 states to transport weapons as long as they are not concealed.Felons can own rifles but not sidearms.You can walk down the street in any town in the U.S. with a sidearm strapped to your side,in plain site,and there is nothing they can do about it.They may not like it,they may threaten you,but there is no laws being broken.If you discharge it within city limits,it's a misdemeanor.If they try and take it from you,you have every right to defend yourself with it.
