canadian buying in usa import duties

Im heading to the us tomorrow to buy a bike since theyre not available over here. I wonder if import duties are the same as the one you pay when the bike is shipped to you. If not how much will i pay when i<ll take it back to canada. And what happens if I don<t declare the bike at the border. I know that theres probably a better place to ask that in the forums but i<m so lazy right now and couldn<t figure it out.

Its like 10% to declare it, 30% if you hide it, but then get caught and produce a receipt, and 60% if you get caught and don't produce a receipt, or produce a receipt that is counterfeit. These are rough estimates, I don't remember the actual numbers.

But picking it up is cheaper still.

what the hell are you talking about?

Bike parts are largely duty-free. The exceptions include built wheels (6%) and complete bikes (up 13% - depending on country of manyfacture)
Parts are not tax free. You will owe at least GST, plus PST too depending on your province (BC was PST-free on bikes and parts).

This is the same amount you'll pay if you have it shipped.
However, if yo uhave it shipped you'll likely have to also pay a brokerage fee which varies by carrier. FedEx and UPS will both gouge you.

It's a raleigh, and the only ones we can order here are canadian raleighs. The 'one way' isn't available in the canadian catalog so there is no way to buy it here. Montreal is only an hour or so from the shop in the US.

To ride the bike across the border would have been great but we just got a snowstorm (around a 25 inches) so that kind of makes it impossible for now.

according to the NAFTA I won't pay any import duties if it's made in North America but where are these bikes from. The frames are probably made in asia or something but could the complete bike be tagged as made in the U.S.A ? I now that Raleigh is an England co but I have an old raleigh cruiser that as a made in the u.s.a sticker.

Anybody knows where they are made now?

Raleigh hasn't been an English company for decades. The current bikes are made in Taiwan like the majority of bikes.

i dont drive across the border or anything, but how will they know that its not just your bike you were taking to the u.s. for a little ride or picking up from a relatives house or something? i dont see how you will get caught having to pay duties or something if it is not being shipped...

when you take things across that are of a certain value, i think over $200, you are supposed to write down the serial numbers, fill out a form and submit it, so they know, it's yours

the border is one area where you don't want to mess around, personally i would just pay whatever i have to pay, chances are it's no more than he would be paying in montreal

Talk this guy down to $450 (he seems kinda desperate): https://montreal.craigslist.ca/bik/594602732.html

Part it out. Use proceeds to further your cycling needs.

Seriously, that Marinoni is a steal.

Totally true, but 450 is still a lot to me, I know that I would make money out of it but it ain't the right time for me, right now, I have 5 complete bikes in my 1 1/2 so no room for now, but thanks for the info, someone I know will surely be willing to buy it.

just bring it back across the border.
Make sure its not in the box. Just tell them when you went across the border they didnt ask you anything about it because it was in the car so you didn't have to declare it.

I have crossed the border tons of times with numerous bikes and not once have they ever asked if i bought it in the states.
