Building leg mass (skinny legs)

I'm fast downhill...
Last year riding helped my lifts. This year training has been spotty due to injuries and the vagaries of life.
I've gone from 275 down to 260.
I'm still slow. 10-13 mph moving average over distance depending on the day.
I have tools, a few tubes, extra lights/batteries. I weighed it the other day and it was 16lbs. I have since shed some of the redundancy.
Bike is configured for reliability as I got sick of breaking things. On my Fuji tourer, I would tear the rear wheel loose if I pedaled hard. Braking was questionable. I hate flats. So running 38 marathon on front and 38 marathon plus on the back. I will not run a plus again.
I'm thinking the heavy pack and heavy tires are costing me a couple mph. I feel I can improve far more by getting in better shape.

Not really the same. In body building competitions, unless it's a 'natural' event, steroids are not illegal or even against the spirit of competition. The only thing that they tend to outlaw is diuretics, which tells you how dangerous those can be.

Most pro's in just about any sport are doping, on anabolics, or taking some type of performance enhancing drug.
That isn't a cop-out to support drug usage or to sell yourself short, those are just the facts. These guys get paid to be the best athletes in the world, be glad they're taking any means necessary to make their sports exciting to watch.
Thank steroids for all of these:
The MLB homerun race in the late 90's.
The big hits in football.
World records in the olympics.
Pro wrestling even being remotely tolerable (it still isn't, but work with me).

They aren't a magic pill, and I don't think they should be demonized. They're a huge part of a lot of sports, just not something I've been willing to do to improve my performance. I don't really agree with any of the associated risks, unless you're competing at a national level and/or you get paid to participate in x sport.

Im not trying to "toot my own horn" but a few of my riding buddies do race on teams. Im not on a team yet and while I have 2 road bikes, I like to go on rides sometimes with my track bike. When we ramp it up, they have a hard time keeping up with my efforts and they are on geared bikes(im not starting a geared vs fixed war. I own and ride 2 road bikes). Like Sprince said, genetics and effort. But to be fair, sometimes they put a stomping on me when im gassed out! And for the record, I am 5'10 and 150ish pounds and I have fair sized quads. My female friends love looking at them.LOL

I'm 58 and have don't expectations about developing big legs. I ride 14-16 miles a day pretty regularly 3-4 times a week fartlek style, eat a good mix of carbs & protein and I might have added an inch or so to my thighs (23" FWTW) & similar (proportionally) to calves over several years. I spin at about 90-92 when I'm warmed up and late spring through late fall though slack off in the winter for lower rpm's 80 or so, to avoid injury, cold, road conditions. If you want big legs and cardio...play a lot of soccer.

Recent research has thrown steroids into a different (less effective) light.

Obviously, there is a problem with steroid abuse in athletics, but a blanket statement like this is a load of crap. I was never a "bodybuilder" but I do have a powerlifting background. It torqued me off when people would look at my size and how much I could lift and instantly assume (some very vocally) that I was on steroids (I wasn't). Likewise, when I was in my 40s and had gotten fat, I dropped a lot of weight over about a year. I can't tell you how many people assumed I had gastric bypass and I even had a few people ask me about the operation.
For the sake of disclosure, I am now 50 and treat low testosterone under a physician's supervision. Once again, it sucks when people equate legitimate treatment for a medical condition with "juicing". My levels with treatment are at or slightly below average for my age group and I work as hard as anyone else for my athletic accomplishments.
Don't make wild assumptions about people.

I honestly do not care what drug (medicinal or otherwise) that anyone is on. I'm real libertarian on that type of thing. If it works for you, then have at it. I've never taken testosterone (or any other anabolic, for that matter), but I can definitely see the attraction.

I have always had thicker legs from roller skating / speed skating. I had a problem last Oct.. and the Dr's had to put me on metabolic steroids. I thought "Cool ! steroids and gamma rays will give me super powers!" Well, not, lol. after 2 months my glutes and legs are so skinny my previously favorite saddle feels like one of those "ass hatchets" Good news is my last treatment is today ! Friday the 13th. tom

are you on the not so fun steroids called corticosteroids? like prednisone and cortisone? cause yeah, they're nothing like anabolic steroids.

My response to them was nope, "SQUATS AND MILK"... or "HEAVY-ASSED WEIGHTS"... in a tone that made them wonder if they were the next protein supplement... I figured it was a less hostile way of noting I was less lazy than them.
It's pathetic how people are profoundly resistant to working a little.
