Largest Chainring on a Swift
Is anyone running a 60 tooth chainring on a swift folder
I want to run a 16 tooth ss shimano cog(smallest size) on the rear and a 60 tooth up front for 70 gear inches
oh, I am running the stock 130mm crankset that came standard on the swift
anyone know if this will work before I shell out the $ for a new ring
is there enough clearance for a 60 tooth....IIRC I saw someone running a 60tooth dura ace chainring on someones swift
thanks all

Is 16 really the smallest ss you can get?
I would have thought a 14 or even a twelve was something that can be obtained...
Can't help with the chainring question though Swifts are pretty versatile so it's likely - as long as it can clear the chainstays properly.

I have a 60T ring on my Swift, on the outer ring position of the crankset, and it still has ample clearance. I can't check right now, but I doubt that it could be fitted to the inner position.
(I got mine, a Vuelta, from Loosescrews.)

Jur, your the man!!): thank you again!!
and the vuelta is the one I will be ordering

yeah, that is what I thought too, turns out shimano 16 tooth is the only readily smallest available, there is also a 15 tooth by ac racing that is sometimes/or not available, and when you can get it pricey compared to shimano
thanks again ride safe guys

I just got my Swift from Peter with 170mm crank, 56t chainwheel, and 16/16 flipflop on the back. That gives me a 66.5" gear, I think. I'd like to have a higher gear, too.
Here's what Peter said:
" I can get a 61t French TA ring [for the Swift], but it costs $70
additional and is a little vulnerable to bending because of it's size."
As for the back, I believe that 16 is as small as they come for the freewheel, but fixed comes smaller.

Here's the 60t chain ring that Jur is talking about -
https://www.loosescrews.com/index.cgi...d=730670925365
That would give me a 71 1/4" gear.

thanks for the links and pics I just got the 60 tooth ordered..so that will give me a 15 fixed and a 16 ss on my flip flop...I like around 70-74 gear inches for my ride
should work out perfect
I hope Peter isn't right about the bigger chains bending
that is what I like about the swift, it will take so many variations without too much trouble

If you want to get a higher gear running a single speed Harris Cyclery has a 15t ss freewheel. Here's the link: https://tinyurl.com/2uhhsh

I just didn't want to go with such a hard to find ss....harris is the only place I could find those and they are in and out of stock, at least with a shimano I can get anywhere
it seems that ac racing is the ONLY manufacturer that mkes a 15 tooth standard thread
you can get 15 tooth acs but in metric and left hand thread(nothing standard)
also it is cheaper to buy just a (1) 60 tooth ring (I have a 16 tooth shimano) than to buy 2 things plus shipping = 15 tooth at Harris and a 56,58 or 60 tooth chainring at another place and
yes I admit it, I am a cheapass

I happen to have an unused 61t chainring in my parts bin. I have no plans for it and would be willing to sell to you. PM me if you're interested.

Just one thing, I think. The 15 with your present chainwheel will give you about the same gear as increasing the chainwheel, plus it should be slightly lighter and more compact, and also you would still be able to use your present chain - so actually less things!

Hey werewolf, maybe I am wrong, but I worked it out to
currently I have
52 x 15 on 406 wheels=64.8 gear inches
60 x 16 on 406=70.1 gear inches
64 is too low
I can live with 70
my sweet spot is 72 but with the small wheels no can do
so buying a 15 =30plus dollars and I would also have to buy a 56 or 58 ring another 40 dollars
am I not seeing this right???
simplest, easiest, cheapest just the one 60 tooth ring..maybe weigh an ounce more
also I have over 20 boxes of new sram chains with powerlink so no probs with chains(picked them up at performance durung year end sale plus another 10 off and another 10 percent off plus member points) came out to about 4.oo a chain so I loaded up
also too late to do anything anyway..I ordered the new ring wednsday
oh also to the above post...moulton's are 16", pashley moulton tsr 20"
currently I have
52 x 15 on 406 wheels=64.8 gear inches

currently I have
52 x 15 on 406 wheels=64.8 gear inches
I'm using this gear calculator:
https://www.panix.com/~jbarrm/pcgi-bin/c41strt.cgi
Got a slightly higher number, 66. I'm calculating the tire diameter as 19" which is what Peter told me it was, not 20, but I haven't measured it myself yet. Note to myself: measure it.
My Swift came with a 56t chainwheel and 16/16 flip flop = 66 1/2" gear, using above. If I switch to 15/15 in the rear, I'll get a 71" gear.
Note: I am totally confused as to why a 20" wheel is called 406mm. 406mm = 16"!

I'm so confused now
I was using sheldon's calculator, I was usning another one and came out with different figures too
that is one difference, you said you ordered custom from Peter, that is why you got a 56, mine came with the stock 52
as far as the 406 as 20 I don't know, I am new to all these smaller tires
20" tires come in 2 flavors. The 451 size is a taller and skinnier version of the BMX (406) size. Tires and rims are not interchangeable. The 451 size is usually lighter and faster. The wider BMX size is more designed for touring and commuting.

If you're not sure about a gear calculator, here's how to do it:
rim diameter (bead seat) - 406mm
tyre diameter - e.g. 28mm
so, wheel diameter: 406 + 2*28 = 406 + 56 = 462mm
wheel diam = 462mm / 25.4"/mm = 18.2"
multiply with cog ratio, eg 60t/15t = 4
gear-inch = 18.2 * 4 = 72.8"

OK, I did a rough measurement. Yeah, rim to rim is about 16", ie about 406 mm, and tire edge to tire edge (Schwalbe Marathon tires) is about 19", just like Peter said. So then, a 16"/406mm wheel is called a 20" wheel? Why? Car tire sizes are even more confusing! Anyway, I was calculating gear size for 19" diameter tires, so the gear sizes I noted above are correct, for my bike.
Jur, you must have narrower tires than mine that you are measuring.
