What kind of speed from a Trek 7.5/7.6 FX?

I have been biking for about one year now. Riding on paved trails I find myself averaging between 15-16 miles per hour. Is that a reasonable speed for someone who is just a year into biking?

It's a reasonable speed, but might not be reasonable for the trails.

Don't worry, I am concerned about pedestrians and if the trails are crowded I either head for the road or keep to a reasonable speed.

Well there ya go, a reasonable speed is based upon conditions.

Reasonable speed is in the eye of the beholder. It's a sliding scale and everybody wishes they were capable of riding a little faster.
