Hey all, this post is mainly for SF bay area people, but I am open to suggestions from anyone. I am trying to find a frame for my fixie project. what I want to do is use a 1970s peugeot frame. either a PX-10 or one of the cheaper UO-8 record du monde.

I guess my question is where do you all go to find your frames? and where might be a good place to find peugeot frames specifically?

I have been hunting craig's list, but all the frames or bikes i find are too big for me. (i'm looking for about 49cm)

a peugeot will be harder to find parts for. i don't know if you know that, but. just 'cause it uses weird french sizes.

The fixed gear thing hasn't really caught on in the bay area yet, you might have to resort to ebay.

Why do you want a Peugeot? There are tons of frames that can be had for as much money as a Peugeot (or less) that are the same or higher quality. I've never really found much about them that really sets them apart from other 10 speeds of the same era, except for the weird, obsolete French sizes required for a lot of the components.


Find an 80's Japanese lugged steel frame or the like (Maybe even an American-made 80's Trek frameset) for your project. Modern components fit, the frames are lighter and the paint is better, IMO. Not that Peugeot frames can't be built up into nice conversions, but is there any particular reason you have your heart set on a Peugeot specifically?

Also, don't buy parts off the internet if you can help it. Support local business. There are plenty of shops (Refried Cycles, Box Dog, more that I can't remember) that sell reliable used parts that you will be able to use for your conversion. Also, the Bike Kitchen has giant bins of parts, and some of the parts are pretty decent. If we don't buy from local bike shops (and local shops in general), San Francisco is going to become yet another cookie cutter American city (without any good bike shops).

My friend is getting rid of his 52ish peugeot right now in the south bay. I guess thats a little big though. The thing has been nothing but a complete pain in the ass for us to put together. Getting this bike for free was a curse.

I think the big reason I want a peugeot is because it would be unique. Plus, I just really like the look of the old peugeot frames. Isn't that one of the biggest things with fixies: doing what you want with your bike. Perhaps I will have to resort to a different frame in the end, but i think it would be fun to try and put something together that is truely my own.

I'm sorry man, I don't mean to sound like I'm raining on your parade, because you should build and ride the bike that YOU want to ride, but I see more Peugeot conversions than just about any other brand. But yeah, find a frame that fits you, build up a bike that's a good balance of being fun to ride and practical for your needs (hopefully there will be some overlap there), and then ride the hell out of it every day.

I would search craigslist a few times a day until you find some crazy good deal on a nice frame in the right size. Hold out for the right size. Good luck!

dancing shoes, jus be patient and wait for one to come up. if i recall i saw a purple and a white uo8. but the only 49 ive ever seen was the one that the shop from santa cruz keeps flooding craigslist with. but that was a good couple months ago

Not to sound all corny or whatever, but it's not the frame or the parts that you hang on the bike that make it unique, it's what you do with it.

Actually, I more meant the satisfaction of being able to look at your bike in a few years and say "god, I love this ****ing thing after everything we've been through together.."

Making your **** look hella gaudy was pretty much the last thing on my mind.
