Trouble Fitting SKS Chromoplastics Fenders

I am (trying to) install fenders for the first time. I have SKS Chromoplastics and a Mongoose SX 4.3 MTB. I wasn't certain whether to mount the SECU-clips on the inside or the outside of the front forks, but the pictures I see indicate they should be on the outside. (On the inside, the mounting bolts collide with the spokes.) The trouble is, they don't fit where they need to go to allow the V-stays to go through the (fixed) bridges. They don't fit because the round sections of the forks prevent the secu-clips from being rotated to the proper position. It isn't even close - I'd have to remove a significant amount of the SECU-slip material, and I'm afraid doing so might compromise their functionality. Even if I don't use the secu-clips the V-stays don't fit.

Has anyone ran into this before? Might I be doig something wrong? What might I be able to do short of removing material? I haven't even started on the rear fender installation yet.

Thanks.

I'm not quite sure what the problem is...a photo would help alot.

Off the top of my head, would mounting the clips outward more help? You could use some washers as spacers and get longer bolts.

Kindof a stupid response but make sure you put the fender on right side forward, I have stupidly tried to mount a fender on back side forwards making it seem impossible to mount!
