Veloce 9-Speed RD with Mirage 8-Speed Ergo compatability?

hi,

i'm trying to upgrade some of the parts on my 96 vintage lemond. it's mostly 8-speed Mirage (rear dérailleur, ergo shifter, brakes, and cassette with a Veloce front dérailleur. my question is, will a 9-speed Veloce rear dérailleur work with my 8-speed mirage ergo shifter?

it's supposedly the Veloce RD9208 model, and it has the "b" adjusting screw alongside the cage by the pulley instead of at the dropout.

here is a pic:

thanks!

I'm not a Campy expert but I do know that the later 9-speed rear derailleurs have a different throw ratio than the earlier ones, I think an early 9-speed RD would work but not a later one. Not sure but I think you would need a pre 2001 RD. Check with https://www.branfordbike.com.
Of course it you've already got the derailleur you could try it.

That's not going to work with 8 speed, at least not very well. Like he said above, the new-style RDs have a different throw. If you used it with your 8sp shifters, it's going to overshift by .22mm, so it will be out by 1.54mm by the end of the cassette. It is possible to adjust it so that you are dead perfect on the center of the cassette, but you are still going to overshift either way. You are better off trying to find an old style derailleur.

Check here for some good info on what works with what.
