My GF rode a pair for most of the 400 mile AYH xmas trip this past year, including about 14 miles of dirt road (6 climbing, 8 descending).

They were fine.

I use them on the track occasionally in training, but prefer tubulars. They're plenty stiff but a little heavy.

They're a bit heavy as Duck said, but also quite bulletproof and quite stiff. Good training tires if you want to train on clinchers. Good on the road. I do prefer tubulars on the track, even for training.

I was debating trading my Volos for Mavics. I'd rather train on clinchers as long as I can get enough air in them.

I sold my clincher Ellipses so I could buy tubular Volos.

I have a rear ellipse on my Fuji Track which I ride only on the road. Supposedly the braking surface will wear off but I haven't had that happen to mine after maybe 1000 miles. Taken a couple of hits without any problem as well.

i know several people who have them and love them (for both street and track riding), but have also had a series of problems with them. enough to keep me away from them.

I know a few people who have snapped the axles of Ellipses. I know in some cases it had to do with the frame - the Raleigh Rush Hour Pro has really really thick fork ends which I guess can lead to problems.

However it sounds like the axles just aren't really that good, and they are proprietary - you have to get new Mavic axles to replace them.

I've ridden one up front on my messenger ride for three months now. That's about 5000k and still straight without a true.
