I cut the rear triangle out of a POS gas pipe Mt. bike I found. My plan is to weld a couple of slotted tabs on the dropouts to hold the axle and give me clearance for 700C wheels. Weld the stays to a couple of plates so I can mount it to plywood, flat plate, bench, or whatever I come up with. I figure for the pointers I can weld some nuts to tabs and use long thumbscrews for in/out adjustment. I need to figure out some easy to use method to attach these while allowing them to adjust up/down. I could weld some slotted plates for this but want to see if anyone has "been there, done that". Anyone ever built something like this before? I'm not looking for radial runout or dish adjustment, just the everyday brake clearance truing that comes from urban commuting for me and everyday abuse on the kids stuff.

I guess you'll just be using this for rear wheels...?

There have been some threads in which people showed photos of truing stands they or someone else had made. You could try a search of the forum. Try also You Tube and Instructables to see if anyone has posted anything there.

A welder allows you to try something and if you do not like it, you can grind it off and do something different.

A Spin Doctor, is what, $40? While I like to build stuff and recycle, this seems like one of those projects where the point of diminishing returns for the time invested is reached rather quickly.
