What does M 10 mean when I am looking for the metric size of a washer?

What does M 10 mean when I am looking for the metric size of a washer?
If I want to specify a (Teflon!)washer that is OD 20mm X ID 10, 3 mm thinckness... how do I ask it? and what company is a good source?

I would try your local hardware store. The exact washer you want may be hard to find; however, there might be alternatives like stacking several washers to get the 3 mm and so on. M 10 generally refers to something being 10 mm in diameter; I don't know whether for a washer it refers to the OD, ID, or something else.

If the object you are sizing goes INSIDE something else ... the size is OD (ie screw, pin, etc)
That way, a 10mm washer fits a 10mm screw. Obviously the 10mm ID washer size is reference only because the "real" ID is "toleranced" larger than the screw so that it will fit over the screw.
