Can someone explain to me why someone in their right mind would name their child Keirin?
Im just blown away by this.
Are there Japanese couples who name their kids Nascar or something?

Although Keirin is synonymous to bicycle track racing, it is not unique to bicycle racing. Google "Mr Keirin" and you'll find that Keirin could be a first name or a last name.

i knew of a girl in grade school whose name was keirin. not sure how it was spelled, but i doubt japanese track had anything to do with it.

By the way the first time I was looking for bike parts in Japan. I went around to bike shops asking "Keirin wa arimasu ka?", except growing up in Australia I was pronouncing "Keirin" like "keer-r'n", 'cos that's how the bike race (and the person's name - it's not an unusual name at all where I live and has nothing to do with parents being into cycling) is prononounced in Australia.
Of course everyone thought I was asking if they had any Kirin (beer) so I got lots of funny looks and almost no bike parts. I realized my mistake on the last day.

A buddy of mine has a sister named Kieran (it's not spelled like the race). I think they get it from Irish/misc. other Celtic heritage.

My neighbour who is like 3 is named keirin. She rides SS though not fixed. I also have a friend at school with the same name.
