To those rocking the thicker KMC chain:
I had my KMC 410H (thicker sideplates, this thing is a beast) for half a year and just recently changed it to a normal KMC chain (the gold one, mmmm).
Now my bike is silent as hell, in opposed to noisy. When I'm riding and look down to assess noise, now 95% of it is tire on road noise, that lovely tire on road noise..ohhhhh. Just saying... if your bike is loud and you're using that chain try changing it to a normal one.
BTW I am using a Miche crankset with an EAI cog; used to have a Surly cog on back though (and the thick chain was loud with both).

I love that tire to road sound at night. It is such a beautiful symphony! So far I've only found that the KMC Z chain to be the most SILENT of all that I've tried (which has only been the fat one this thread was about and a sach chain)

keeping your chain clean and well lubed I think is more important than how thick your chain is
also stretched chains are noisy
and yea, 'woosh' sounds are nice

it may sound stupid but yes, I didn't believe it would matter, but apparently it does, so I'm posting it here in case there are other people like me who don't believe their thicker chain is making more noise.

hey dumbass you realize "thicker kmc chains" are made for a different drivetrain?
Run a 1/8th chain on a 1/8th drivetrain and its just as silent as a 3/32 on 3/32.

410s are pretty low end kmc's, that might have had something to do with it. It actually makes little obvious/ a priori sense that a chain with thicker side plates would be noisier, that was a rhetirical question up there.
I really like the 510ZH's---on my setup they are always a bit noisy at first but quieten down quick. Currently I am rocking a 1/8" skinny 410---I didn't know you could get them as H's. Just checking to see how a $6 chain works, and it aint bad. It's pretty quiet anyway.

um WRONG! Chains vary in how much noise they make. I have the THICK 1/8 KMC chain he's talking about and it is indeed very noisy.

noob, sideplate width would have absolutely nothing to do with road noise.
p.s noob, your "thick" chain was old, old chains stretch and always have more road chatter than new chains.
p.p.s noob, who the **** says noob.

He had a ****ty chain, that is the most likely answer for why his drivetrain was making noise.

I've heard the fat wipperman chain has never been quiet and I have the thick KMC chain that matches my 1/8th drivetrain, so please explain how you think every 1/8 chain is going to be silent like a 3/32nd?

Then you would be right.
Let's also ignore the fact that 99% of chain failure is due to incorrect installation or extreme wear, the former being much easier to do for a noob since 1/8 chains hardly come with real masterlinks.

I run a blue KMC 1/8 chain to a dura-ace 1/8 cog. It have never noticed it being noisy. It's pretty damn silent and I have never lubed it.

Especially when you consider the fact that 3/32 chains are in much more wide use than 1/8 chain, are designed to handle extreme variation in chainline, lighter and faster on the road and in the stand.
Then you would be right.
