umm- just bought a ritchey ascent comp for 150 bucks! What a wicked ride-and the bike STILL rocks- 13 years old or tha like-anyway- I don't really want to pull the threaded stuff out for suspension forks- any leads on threaded 1 inch suspension forks? also would the threadless be safer on the frame? don't want to bust her and this is thin chromo tube. j

I tried to do the same thing earlier this year. Your best bet is to find one on ebay. Be sure to check what length tube you need. I actually find one that fit (1" threaded) but it was too short for my headtube. If you have a short headtube you will probably find one pretty easy. IF you have a longer head tube, I'd say keep searching, but your chances are very low.

where did you find the shorty? my tube is maybe 4 inches? the one you mentioned, was it ebay or store? again with this being a very short tube-in your opinion would a threadless put less strain on the tube ( internal ) thanks for replies guys.

I found the shorter one on ebay. Luckily, if you buy a longer one you can always get it cut down from what the guy at the LBS told me. However, I'm not sure I believe that 100%. If you need 4 inches and get a 7 inch tube and the threading is only 1 inch long, then cutting it down will cut off the threads. So, IMHO, you should try to get a tube that is the right length, or just barely longer (i.e., no more than an inch longer).

A 4 inch tube should be easy to find on ebay. I rememember seeing quite a few of that length and 5 inch length too. Plus several that were 6 inchs. My problem was that I need a 8.5 to 9.0 inch length.

As for putting a threadless on there, mmmm I'm not sure about that. I was told that since I had a threaded headtube, I HAD to go with a threaded fork. So you may want to talk to someone at your LBS to see if they can fit a threadless on your bike. It was my impression that you can't. I could be wrong of course.

I was told that it was as simple as the removal of the threaded headset- pop in a new headset- makes the upgrade prob a hundred more in a shop though- my not wanting to remove it was the fact its a ritchey logic headset and the pimple faced 20 year old mech didn't care- just wanted to sell parts. I assume tom ritchey knew what he was doing when he built this bike and I don't want to mess w\ a very well designed bike. Thanks for your replies- I found a new suntour in a catalog I may buy- got burned from ebay for 16 mm films so I don't REALLY want to trust seals are intact ect.j
