Clotter pin fixed gear conversion
Hey guys,
i'm kind of new to the whole fixed gear thing, but have friends who have convinced me to convert my old road bike to a fixed gear.
One problem. The road bike that I have has clotter pins of them. I hate it because it's so hard to get off. I got on side of it off and i was so relieved, but then when i tried the other side, the pin snapped. Now the pin is stuck in there. Any advice? Any more info needed?
Also i was wondering if anyone knows how to get the bottom bracket of a clotter pin set up out.
Thanks a lot! I want to finish this bike and ride!

after reading what you drunkenly wrote 5 times use a punch to get what, Im assuming is the pin out of your cottered cranks. I prefer a sawzall though because your not going to use them anyways so have at it.

He's talking about a clotter pin, not cotter. To stop clots, you need an anticoagulant.

Take a punch and tap out the pin. The bb should be basically the same as any other bike, the axle should be all that is different. Take off the lockring, and turn out the bearing cup/retainer thing. Depending on which crank you have off, you may not have to get the other off to pull the bb out.

get a length of pipe and stick it between the bottom side of the cotter and a hard cement floor with the cotter inside, then smack it with a hammer. After that you just unscrew the lockring and cups and it should all pop out. If you replace the bottom bracket you will need new cranks because your cottered cranks wont fit on a square taper bottom bracket, and make sure you grease up the threads in the bottom bracket shell and on your new bottom bracket before you put it in.

OP, when you get the cotter pin out and have the bottom bracket removed, measure the axle, making sure to measure from end to bearing retainer. the distance between the two retainers, and the final retainer to end distance. You can then go shopping for a square taper axle to use with your old bottom bracket. I'd get some new bearings, too. Harris cyclery will have all the stuff you need.
What bike do you have? If it's a Raleigh, DO NOT THROW THE BOTTOM BRACKET AWAY. They use 26tpi threading which is not compatible with the standard 24tpi stuff.
