painting on logos?? help please
hi yall. cant believe it took me so long to stumble upon this site!
anyways, im trying to figure out a good way to paint on my own logos on my frame. i was going to use stencils, but then realized theyre not very ideal for rounded surfaces.
so how is it done at the factory?
i know i can have custom decals made, but id really like to be able to custom paint it myself. are there specific kind of stencils for this type of application?
im thinking of using an exacto knife and cutting letters out of masking tape. im not sure how well ill be able to cut -tape- though.
hopefully somebody knows how to do this!

What kind of bike are you wanting to paint logos for? If it is something that you could possible find a decal kit for I'd certainly suggest that route in terms of ease.
I'm not sure masking tape will give you a sufficiently crisp line. If I were going to attempt something like this myself I think I'd create a series of "screens" made from some thin adhesive vinyl and try that in hopes of getting sharp edges.
There was a thread about a Tommasini track frame resto project not long ago that had a diagram for tube logo measurement I think...

some methods I have used:
Sketch the lettering onto the tube in pencil then painting over it with a very fine brush. Outline first then block in with a bigger brush. Takes a steady hand and plenty of time.
Use rub-down lettering eg letraset. Can be painted around with a fine brush - freehand.
Cut a mask out of frisk paper (low tack similar to contact) and spray with an airbrush - similar to Colnago's method.

You can make black-on clear decals with the right paper in a laser printer, and paint the decal from the back before you put it on the bike. That way your freehand painting doesn't have to be quite perfect, since the black lines will hide small mistakes.
