Safe commuting routes in Oakland
My daughter has decided to start commuting by bike in Oakland. Having just attended the funeral for a friends sister killed on a bike I'm quite fearfull. I'm in LA and don't know anything about riding up there, can anyone advise us of some sites where we can find safe routes. She is not a "cyclist" but a bike rider looking to save gas getting to work. Thanks, V.B.

where in oakland? this bike map might be getting outdated, but i've found it helpful for planning routes:

the east bay bike coalition is a good resource.
i used to live at lake merritt in downtown and have done a buncha riding into the hills and up toward and around cal. ... i've lived all over the bay area and, as far as city-riding goes, oakland is tops. in fact, i live out in the burbs nowadays but take the effort to ride with the oakland yellowjackets when i can cuz i miss the neighborhood.

Ask here and also on forums.craigslist.org (click on bicycling forum)- lots of bike commuters very familiar with local routes.
Good luck!
