headset (upper & lower cup)
I recently purchased a cane creek s2 headset for my giant atx870 frame. I'm having a little trouble installing the cups, or maybe just shoving the cup all the way into the frame. So my question is, are the cups suppose to slide in freely or do I have to use some sort of lubricant to fit it into the frame, or do I just try to hammer it in. My next question is, if it does not go all the way in, can i ride the bike like that or is it unsafe to do so. All suggestion wanted, and thanks for the help.

a headset press is the only way to get headset cups into a frame.
they aren't supposed to slide freely in.
if you don't have a headset press, take it to a shop. and no, it isn't safe to ride if the cups aren't all the way in. 1) they won't be secure enough if you're using a mallet to pound them in, 2) they won't be aligned properly and your bearings will be rough and 3) you could ruin your frame by not installing them properly.

do not hammer it in... You might damage the cups..
If you dont have the proper tools to install the cups, you can make do by using a long bolt, 2 wide washers, and a nut.
just clamp it to fit.
