Project bike:Will it last just a few rides??
Hey, my friend wanted to get into mtb., and I was getting tired of him hogging my Cannondale, so I decided to give him my old bike...my old bike is not what you would call good. Its a cheap wally world bike, but I told him I would rework it for him, and see if I could actually get it, decent enough to ride on the trails (the breaking of this bike caused me to buy my c'dale F300) for a while. My idea is that it will last him a couple rides, until he starts getting good, and starts thrashing it around more and has it brake on him, then he will have to buy a dec bike, but he won't do it right now. Anyway I took everything off this frame...sandblasted it, and was going to paint it, but it looks cool sandblasted. (kind of like the Delorian, out of Back to the Future). I cleaned the crank up real well, and the bearings, and tried to install a Manitou SX that I had, but it wouldn't fit. After the frame was done, I had to put the faky "extreme support shock" back on. It wieghs more than the frame by about 10 pounds! Anyway, Its almost all put back togethor, and from a distance you can't tell its a cheap bike, until you see that it doesn't have quick release, and the brakes are crap. But hopefully it will last long enough to get him into mtb. The bike is lighter after removing the paint which suprised me. The only thing I want to do now, is get some IRC Mythosyx...I have some and there decent, but cheap, you can get them for like $15. There thick, and will hopefully prevent all the punctures I used to get, and take a little more of the shock.
Do you guys think it will last like 10 long rides?
How long?
If this works, I only will have spent the money on the wheels, and nothing else...

Bikes: My primary bike is a Schwinn Homegrown HT with a 2002 Manitou Six Deluxe (Not of the POS variety) and XT comps, my roadie is an 80s vintage Trek 1000 with 105 comps, and I'm working on building a hucking machine.
Those frames aren't designed for off road use, look at the sticker above the BB on the seat tube that usually comes with them. Strange how they sell bikes labeled as mountain bikes that aren't really designed to go on mountains.
You can go find a cheap frame for 50 bucks, and its gonna be better than some wal mart POS.

I know about the sticker, but he doesn't ride hard enough yet, I want him to get into it, and then have the bike break cuase I can't afford that right now, cuase I got to buy a car, and he will probably buy a decent bike once it breaks, but he won't do it right now....
