New Guy IN Va Beach
HI,
I just bought a mountian bike for pleasure riding here, My Dr says I need to find a low impact exercise that dosen't impact on my joints the way jogging does,
I have developed some nerve problems most likely due to to many years of jogging.
So The bike seems to be great exercise and dosen't bother my Back.
I have started with short rides around 12 miles average spped 12-15 mph with occasional 20 milers on the weekend when I have more time, even at my age 57 I m seeing some dramatic changes in muscle mass on my quads and legs. have a cat eye computer to keep me honest...
I decided to order some shoes and a pair of those candy sl clips by crankbrothers at bike island . I ve seen some good reviews.
I used to ride many years ago, and just stopped .
A little worried about winter here in VA it can get very chilly when you outside in the breeze..
Doug

As a runner, you probably know all about the benefits of technical clothing. They are absolutely priceless when it comes to blocking the cold wind and extending your "cycling season".
As for the clipless shoes, you will be pleased with the increase in the power you can generate.
Keep the rubber side down,
Patrick

Greetings from a Va. Beach native! It's a great place to cycle because it's flaaaat.
Cycling is alot better than running when it comes to impact, because there isn't any. You also cover alot more ground which I like. I have found that it's actually good for my back. When I have disk problems, I get on the bike and my back loosens up and the pain goes away. Have fun!

You should be seeing batches of transcontinental bike tourists as the summer wears on. I understand that the eastern end of the TransAmerica bike trail ends in your town. Check the Adventure Cycling site for arrival times.
