Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Chicago fixed gear scene

So I am stuck in Chicago for a couple weeks or so due to work. But I have my bike with me. What is it like here? Any good good fixed gear shops? Any group rides going on? Any good bars where the cycling culture likes to hang out at? Give me something fun to do.

Try Yojimbo's Garage(Bike Shop) on the south side. Say hi to his cats while you are there.

As far as cycling culture bars go, you can't beat the Handlebar.

Critical Mass is always fun in Chicago too. Last time we all got on the Lakefront Trail. Nothing quite like mashing through a trail with 5,000 other people.

Yeah. Def NOT the South Side. A few blocks north of Division on Clybourne.

Also check out this race on the 27th. Somebody told me about it over the weekend while I was out. I thought it was Critical Mass-like in nature, but its a race.

yojimbo's is great. there's also a velodrome just outside the city if you're into that.

Just cruise up and down Milwaukee Ave., from Diversey to downtown, and you'll be in the heart of it all. And, at some point, do an early morning lakefront ride. South Side's less crowded but it's all beautiful.

I grew up in that area when the notorious Cabrini Green housing projects were up and running, hence, my reference to the south side. I have heard that the area is much better since the projects were demolished, and the hipster yuppie crowd has moved in. Regardless, Yojimbo's(1310 N. Clybourn) is the shop to visit when in town, pet Gracie and Gary the cats when you get there, bring Marcus a sixer too!
