I try to find these every so often but so far to no avail. Even tried the CR list but got nothing but crickets chirping (but those guys hate Bottecchias anyway ) I picked up this blurry picture off eBay a while back (should have bought the danged decals but I didn't have any use for them at the time - actually I still don't but I'd like to be prepared just in case). Anyway, if anybody has any pictures or thinks they can guess what the word is above "Bottecchia" on the seat tube decals or knows what C.T.V. stands for (no point in Googling it since you get a million hits for Cycling TV) that would be great. Thanks.

Bottecchia was originally a contract bike - made by another company and they put Bottecchia's name on it. (interesting parallel with BD's current reincarnation)

The original company was Carnielli and they sold out to Turato and they were located in Veneto... so I think that's what CTV means: Carnielli Turato Veneto.

Well sort of...but nothing like the BD bottecchiausa situation. Ottavio Bottecchia never owned or ran a bike company like Eddie Merkx nor were Bottecchias contracted in the way that Greg LeMond's bikes are produced by Trek. Carnielli was always the producer of the Bottecchia brand since Teodoro Carnielli cut a deal with Ottavio Bottecchia around 1926 to use his name as the brand for Carnielli bikes for marketing purposes. And since Bottecchia died almost before the ink on that contract was dry it's doubtful he had much input into the design or production of those bikes. So essentially Carniellis and Bottecchias were one and the same rather than Carnielli producing bikes for Bottecchia under contract.

Your explanation would be plausible except...those are 50's - 60's decals when Bottecchia was owned solely by Teodoro Carnielli & Co. They didn't sell out to Turato until 1997 so I doubt they were peering into the future. But who knows, the C and the V may very well stand for Carnielli and Vittorio-Veneto. But that still leaves the T.

Oddly enough, just for trivia's sake, in 1961 Bottecchias carried a Carnielli 50th anniversary 1911-1961 decal. In 1989 they again carried an anniversary decal, this time for the Carnielli 80th anniversary 1909-1989. So they gained two years somewhere. I've often wondered how that happened. Carnielli is still in business and still makes bicycles but only recreational and city bikes. And while the Bottecchia brand has been passed to Turato, they are still in Italy and have done a fine job of continuing the tradition of Bottecchia as a broad spectrum manufacturer producing everything from city bikes and mountain bikes to professional class racing machines. I would have no qualms about riding a new Bottecchia 8avio today if they were available in the US.

Hey Kommisar, I was the one who bought those decals. The seat tube decals says "Ottavio" above "Bottecchia". I have actually bought two Bottecchia decal sets from "giopan49" on e-bay. They have the same down tube decals, but the other set has Bottecchia eagle crest seat tube decals that says "Vittorio ven" and "Fabbrica cicli". I'm going to use them (one set..) on my 1953 Bottecchia I got over a year ago...I now almost got this bike together close to how I want it, so I will be back with pics soon..

Here is a pic of how the down tube decal should look like - in a beige field. The picture is from L'eroica 2005 I think..

O, and I also got these pics from "giopan49", items he sold earlier. Bottecchia stem badges and an old Bottecchia head badge (that I would like to find..), with the holes on the side of the badge.
Also a rear view.

Sweet! You da man! That's what I needed to know. Mille grazie. Seems like the seat tube decals varied some throughout the years but I don't have a enough samples from that period to tell exactly which decal went with which year.

Any chance I could convince you to take some high resolution pictures and measurements of the decals before you use them? With that we could get reproductions made which could come in handy in the future.

The bike in that picture looks like it has some version of the Cinquantennario (50th anniversary decal) which would make it a 1961. That's strange how they did the beige background on the blue bike. I wonder if that was common? Unfortunately I've not had much success finding pictures of early Bottecchias (and certainly not any actual frames or bikes). A fellow forum member was going to let me have his mid-60's frame but I guess he changed his mind so I'm still looking.

Can't wait to see the pictures of your '53.

Regards,
Derrick

Perhaps something like Carnielli from Vittorio Veneto in the Province of Treviso? My daughter was born in Vittorio Veneto in 1997. I wonder if before or after the sale to Turato? I drove by the Carnielli factory every time I went to the hospital (BTW, at the time I was living just down the road from the Campagnolo factory in the province of Vicenza.)

Oh, long before the Turato sale. The decals are from the 50's-60's.

You'll have to post pictures of that bike. Doesn't sound like one I'm familiar with.

Looks like one from the 1950's but the pics are small so I can't see a lot of detail. Maybe you could post some higher res pics on a picture hosting site.

petandbikes,

The main downtube and seattube decals are available. There is a guy in Italy named Giorgio Panciroli <info@vintagetransfers.it> (https://www.vintagetransfers.it/home.htm) who can provide original decals for a 50's vintage Bottecchia. Those decals are varnish type decals which I understand can be difficult to apply if you don't have experience with them. I've never done it myself. JRrestore (https://www.velocals.com/servlet/the-...hia/Categories) provides reproduction decals. He produced a set 1950's decals based on the pictures I provided above. Those are modern vinyl sticker type decals which are much easier to work with unless you are looking to do a 100% correct original restoration. There are probably some other smaller decals that are not easily found. With the pictures we can probably narrow down your model year. The heavy brass head badge on yours indicates something from the 1950's. The 1948 bike that I've seen a picture of had a decal instead of a brass badge and the 1960's and later bikes have a much lighter, stamped brass head badge. I'd like to see details of the lugs, seat cluster, dropouts, components, and any decals that might still remain on the frame.

-Kommisar
