Campy BB Bearing Retainer?

This thing.



I can understand the purpose of this clip while installing the crank but what purpose does it serve after installation? Is it necesary.

Looks like the clip from the Ultratorque BB. Yes it is necessary, it keeps the bearings in place. Without it, the bearings and shaft will be able to move side to side.

Yes, it is on my Record 10 speed Ultra torque BB

I had taken it all apart to see if the BB was part of a creak (it wasn't) and fiorgot to put it back on. I can't detect any side to side movement in bearings or shaft without it but I'll snap it back in. Certainly won't slow me down.
