SS/FG Conversion Project
Hey all, so I'm finally converting my old Araya steel frame tourer into a SS/FG for my 4 season commuter and bar bike.
It's a steel frame bike, and considering it will be my winter bike I was wondering what precautions can I take to minimize frame rust and such. Michigan uses an ridiculous amount of salt on the roads during the winter. In fact, this is destroyed all the components on my entry level MTB that I commuted with last winter. With my Araya, I notice a few rusty spots on the frame already, but I'm probably going to sand it down anyway and do a different paint scheme.
I'm also looking at a first time wheel build.
A friend of mine at work recommended this set up (per a build he's doing right now).
Milwaukee Bicycle Co 4 Star Hubs (flip/flop) (they even have a nice heady beer mug indicating my bar bike, now if only they made Orange Julius hubs..haha sorry bad BSNYC reference)
on a set of Mavic Open Pro Rims
From what I understand, the Open Pro's are pretty durable (used to be used for the Paris-Roubaix I think). I like durable wheel sets, but at about 130lbs, it's usually not a problem.
What do you think?
