I just bought a cannondale bicycle pump. It seems to function fine, puts air in the tires, but a small amount of air comes out of the top of the pump if you don't push down fast enough. It doesn't seem like a big deal, because the pump still works, but it puzzled me at first, if you don't touch it, it still holds air. Is this normal? or should i take 'er back?

The lip on the cup seal was likely twisted during assembly. Take it back for a replacement like they said.

got it : ) new one works fine. for the record, the LBS said this was "normal" at high pressures, and as i said, it did not prevent you from pumping the tire up, it seemed like i was just putting too much pressure on it at one time. In any case, the new one doesn't have this little issue. They weren't rude at all, seemed happy to help me out.

I think I know the pump you are talking about - I assume that it has one nozzle for either valve heads. It is normal as in common, but it is not supposed to happen. I just got tired of swapping it in so I deal with it since it is my back-up pump.
