Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? I see the same thing here. There was one kid who had a gorgeous cannondale road with downtube shifters and flat bars so narrow it looked like he couldn't fit his hands between the brakes and the ends of his bars.

so i'm assuming the reason someone would do that is to look cool?

b/c if it's to weave in and out of traffic, their body is wider than the handlebars...

right?

its often the gap between mirrors where the handle bars are, so it doesn't matter about the width of the rider's shoulders, as this is not going through the same width gap

Some clueless hipster on an FG with bars like that almost hit me. He was climbing a bridge, swerving violently. I was descending (at a moderate speed) and had to panic stop (almost endo'ed).

It could be an isolated incident, but I think bars that narrow might present a safety hazard.

Thanks,

Yes I have shot for COG. I did the "Tokyo Pisto Explosion" article. Well the shots anyway.

It is weird how many track bikes are in Tokyo these days. Back when I started riding a fixed there were next to none in the City.

Now a 5 minute walk in Shibuya you may see up to 20. I should shoot an article something along the lines of "10 minutes in Tokyo"

drue.

Semi OT but google maps has a complete street view for tokyo. if you doods are amazed by the colors of tokyos bigger shopping districts and odaiba, but are too poor to go there, messing around with it is good. no nighttime shots though, so you won't get to experience those breathtaking color-gasms of the huge shopping coridors in street view-o-rama.
