Hello to all,
My name is Al Montgomery. I am the lucky owner of a '73 Schwinn Super Sport. This bike was given to me as a gift from my parents for my 8th grade graduation. It came from Sterling Illinois, the name of the bike shop was "Lee's Schwinn". My father got a part time job there in the early '70's and I can remember going there and "helping out" at the store. I also remember drooling over all the "new" Schwinns on the showroom floor.
It's color is Sunset Orange and his name is "CJ" because it's a March '73 model. The bike is 95% original. The rear rim and handlebars had to be replaced "back in the day" due to mis-haps of the road & playgrounds here and there. My friends & I all had '70's Schwinn 10 speeds and we rode them all over the Morrison Illinois area where we grew up.
Through the years the bike has gone countless miles with excursions to the New Glaris and Milwaukee Wisconsin areas as well as trips to my grandparents house in Sandwich Illinois. In the late '70's and early '80's I rode on the TOMRV (Tour of the Mississippi River Valley) ride from the Quad cities to Dubuque Iowa.
I've taken it completely apart and cleaned & polished it several times and it's time for another "restoration" as the past years have taken their toll on the chrome.
I currently live in a small town just west of Rockford Illinois named Winnebago. I have just recently gotten back into riding it again. I love the rolling hills of Northern Illinois. It's nice to be able to get a small brake on the down side of each hill.
I intend on "restoring" it again this winter. I would like to return him to his original "store bought" condition by acquiring an original set of handlebars and an original rear Weinmann rim. It will also need new orange handlebar tape.
Hope to chat with a few of you SS heads out there soon. The Schwinn 10 speeds bikes were a part of my youth and I truly love them.
Yours in cycling,
Alma

Hello Alma, if you have not already found the Classic & Vintage forum, you should head over there now . There are more than a few dedicated lovers of Schwinns, and they will be more than happy to help you with getting the SS back to as close to perfection as possible.

Welcome to BF, and feel free to PM me with any questions !
