tire direction

I want to make sure I got my tires on the right way the tires have arrows {------rear front ------} does the front point to the front when it is on the top or the bottom or the tire if that makes any sense? thanks

Tread chevrons pointed the same direction the bike is. >>
I see many mtb with them reversed.
The rear is sometimes reversed if worn and downhillin'

Does it usually really matter? Seems to me tire tread patterns are mostly marketing hocus pocus anyway.

My set of specialized hemisphere's have a thread pattern that seems to channel water away from the contact patch better if aligned properly.

Then again I've seen tires that are nearly slick that are directional too...
