I'm able to resist the urge, but I always find it funny that they *all* seem to watch as you ride by...

I rode past a herd (is that the right term?) of goats today in Maryland. I was tempted to yell "boo" at them to see if they were those cool fainting goats...

No farms where I ride.
Lots of crows in the city though, I like to 'caw caw' at them when I go past.

I always do that, when riding past them for the first time they "boooood" me, startled me, now I like to be the first one to booo. Oh, late at nite -dark, a herd of sheep ran beside me. OK on the other side of a fence though - scared the sh... out of me. Meeeeh!

I have, and I learned a valuable lesson: riding by a farm once and mooing at the cows attracted the attention of the farm dog, which then proceeded to chase me down the road...

I don't usually do that...although some of my fondest childhood memories are family road trips with my father mooing at them....he does it now for my kids. Although I might be tempted at one point on my ride....anyone know what a Yak says? I pass two of them fairly often.

Yes, I exchange greetings with animals.
Cows - "Moo"
Goats & sheep - "Baa"
Cats - "Hey kitty"
Dogs - "Hey pup"
Barking dogs - "RRRRoof! Good dog."

This reminds me of a comedian I saw, back in the early '80s. I think it went something like this:
Why do we moo at cows, when we drive by?
Are we trying to fool them?
Are they supposed to think, "Hey! Is a cow driving that car? How did she afford that?"

The only farm animals I see on a regular basis have already been processed into neatly shrinkwrapped chunks, in the supermarket deep freeze. I have been known to 'moo' and 'baaa' at them on occasion.

you should keep in mind that in some counties it's against the law to harrass the livestock. If any of the livestock were to get hurt and you were caught it could mean some trouble for you.

Here in the Eastern US mountains we have ravens (Corvus corax) and I have over the years learned to mimic some of their repertoire. When I hear them I'll respond with a fast three-note call and that often gets me company for a few minutes. The mature ones will clam up, circle 'round, and rustle in for a closer look. The young ones will fly directly in for a real chat. I have no idea what I'm communicating, but part of me thinks they're saying, "Raven my *ss!".

Yeah. I've done that. and once regretted when I discovered someone near... Up in the mtns here, careful.. Those goat/sheep crossings.. You might find yourself stuck behind slow moving goats/ sheep for as much as 15 minutes.

Ummm, I've done it in the past, long ago past, but not recently.

When I ride by parking lots I yell, "honk, honk, honk, hoooooonnk"

When I drive by a group of cyclists I yell, "clickclickclickclickclick" only works when they're not pedalling though.

I usually moo at the cows. I always bark at the squirrels and deer I see to keep them from running in front of me. Interestingly, my riding partners don't think this is at all weird.

My boyfriend constantly moos at the cows. He cannot resist himself. He also likes to herd runway cows, while riding, given the opportunity.

Heh, I thought I was the only one who barks at animals to scare them off. Squirrels and rabbits seem to respond better to audible danger than the obvious threat of being crushed...

I think cows get bored, so they're interested in anything different. If you drive by in a car, you're not different. If you stop, though, you're different, and that gets their attention, for better or worse. They may think it's lunchtime, or just be curious or cautious. I suppose a bike is similar, although I don't actually recall riding past one on a bike.

I'm too mature to moo at cows or make motorboat sounds when i see a boat, etc.
