Integral Headsets - Compatibility?

Hi all,

I recently bought a Bianchi Axis (2004) and it has a 1-1/8 inch steer tube with an integral headset. I was wondering if all integral headsets are made to a standard set of dimensions (you can buy any brand and it will fit), or if they are designed with one manufacturer in mind.

I was also wondering about the fork as well. Are today's aftermarket carbon forks usable with either a standard headset or an integral one or do you have to purchase a fork with a race/crown that is designed for an integral headset?

I really ask these questions because I may upgrade the headset and fork in the future and I wanted to know what my options are.

Thanks in advance.
