Because they aren't useless. Given two similar bikes, a thief without tools will take the unlocked bike over the one with any kind of locking mechanism.

Properly locking with a two factor approach takes too long. U lock through the back rim, frame, and rack plus a cable through the front wheel takes time. Ugh. I'd pay well for a brainlessly simple and fast system, especially in inclement weather.

That we even have to use them. Socially, we are a ******** people.
Visit Switzerland some time. Or Japan. People leave thier bikes unlocked all over the place. Theft is extremely rare.

u-locks weigh toooo freakin much!!! i'd be willing to pay for a titanium one, or just make it out of aluminum SOMETHING!!!!!
and U-locks that are too small to fit around the front wheel as well as the frame and a pole
i'm thinking a chain may be the best option, but those too weigh way too much
