Have you ever felt this way??
I was in a restaurant tonight and saw a sign that said:
I am so far behind I thought I was in first!!
That is a good description of most of my "competitive" rides.......

I bought a shirt with that slogan on it for my sister-in-law, who "runs" in local 5K races. She does usually finish last and frequently by 4-5 minutes behind the next to last finisher.

First or last.... at least you finish, which means you were out there doing it.

If you finish last, it's just a fun ride.
If you finish ahead of anyone, and counted, you are a racer.
If you want to finish better than next-to-last, start training harder.

I've been on rides where I thought I was the only one riding that day- Then you stop at the cafe and there are 20 cyclists in front of you in the queue.
Had this happen on a mountain bike ride and all the roadies went inside the cafe on a beautiful morning. We sat outside and the Waiter came straight to us- took our order first and we had eaten breakfast before any of the Road group got served. There are advantages to being a regular customer.

Yep. I always seem to end up near the back, no matter how I try. It's not that I'm slower..... I just cruise along without noticing the other riders in the group are passing me! And then, there I am, at the back again. But hey, my philosophy is that no matter where I finish, I finished...... while 5 years ago I was a sluggish marshmallow.

I think I posted this memory before, so apologies for the repetition but it made an impression on me
The winner of the London marathon running race in the late 1980s was all showered and changed when he was interviewed. About his win, he said - "I ran as hard as I could for 2 hours 10 minutes, the people finishing now have run as hard as they can for twice as long, and more"
That's the spirit

When I am passed by a youngster, I just remind myself that he is probably way behind me in total miles, so therefore I am still ahead.
