"A Brake on a Fixie!?... Dumbest thing I ever saw"
This is what was shouted at my buddy as were riding through the Inner Harbor tonight by another fixed gear rider LOL. I'm riding a brakeless track setup. My buddy is riding a basically stock Surly steamroller with the stock front brake. Were riding fairly casually slow, maybe 16-18 mph tops... just cruising over to see some friends at a bar, and this guy comes rolling up behind us on a fixed gear bike, shouts that and just keeps rolling. Looked like a messenger. He pulled off to the right and stopped like 100 yards up. We pulled off up the same way he did, rode past with no comment and that was it.
Weird? I dont think I've ever witnessed or been a victim of fixism. Just had to share haha...

What gets me about the rude fixie rider the OP was talking about is that there is a certain sense of commoraderie between bikers on the road, everyone is pretty friendly. I've never heard of anyone being so rude, especially someone on a bike to another total stranger on a bike. Cant say i would've been as nice as you, OP. way to keep ur cool though

I hate when people yell at me on the road.
Last time someone did that they were in a car and when I caught up with them at the light I punched their mirror before taking a right turn.
Before that some guy and his girl on a tandem passed me going down a hill while I was on my fixed. Caught up to them at the next light of course, and he turns around to say with a sneer "This hill is way more fun on a tandem, I should know" - to which I replied "At least I don't need a girl to help me ride by bicycle."
If that rude fixer tried one of those lines on me, I'd probably have to cut him off at the intersection while asking him "What's the matter, you want me to copy your stupid style instead?" Hopefully I wouldn't be the one getting punched that time.

I had nothing. It came across my mind that he used the term fixie but not everyone is so hip to these forums and the party foul cycling vocabulary. It was 30 degrees... we were trying to stay warm. He pedaled weird too... like bowlegged. Hell I may have even known him but I doubt it.

I've noticed that there are a lot of these types of riders in baltimore. Have gotten a lot of these types of comments visiting friends in fells point and canton. My favorite one was "thats not a track bike, why are you riding it fixed..." The best thing was the guy/boy/kid was like 13, and was riding a old fuji conversion, rattle canned bright yellow. Just have to laugh at still attached pie place and wheel reflectors.

People usually aren't worth the effort. If they get a response from me it's the standard "**** you" or I just don't say anything at all.

My wife has discovered I tend to filter out almost everything that's ever been shouted out to us when riding that's clearly doesn't have that "warning" tone to it, noting she often times is seated about 2' behind me on our tandems.... something that I really never thought about riding my single bikes.
If someone does something that catches my eye, like waving or flipping me off my standard response is to flash a smile and a wave. Throwing out a wave or smile is a perfect fit for any situation since friendly folks always like to be acknowledged and being friendly in the face of someone who's being an asshat curtails escalation while also denying the satisfaction of thinking you give a sh*t about anything they have to say or think.
This stuff work works pretty well off the bike too.
Bottom Line: Life's too short to worry about impressing or not meeting the expectations of someone who you don't know, who can't do anything to make your life better, and who can't help you meet your goals.

im gonna start putting postits on people bike with "im faster then you"... thats just priceless
best thing ever yelled at me was after the big snow dump last year when i rode to work before the plow came (like 1-2ft of powder). i rode down the street on my mountain bike (weight back so the front wheel floated on the top) and this guy digging his car out of the snow yelled "thats ****ing stupid" to which i responded "hows the shoveling coming along?"...
seem to get lots of stuff yelled at me when i ride after a fresh dump of snow.
or the standard thing i hear "nice helmet ***"

Oh ****, I just remembered.
I was in the north-east of Calgary, which is the less than desireable area... Just casually cruising down a residential street, wth housing projects, and basically the most ghetto run-down houses of all time.
Some thug dude was standing in his front yard with some ugly girl. He see's me riding by and yells "Nice bike." sarcastically. I yelled back "Nice House."
Wasn't super clever, but I think I hit a nerve. He was so pissed.
