The Golden Boy 

I was able to take off of work today- I've been so busy with work, I really haven't had time to do the things I want to do- and riding is one of them. I went for around 16 miles on the Glacial Drumlin Trail today- I got to see some pretty flowers, some pretty birds (including a bright red cardinal that seemed to "sit" in "mid air"- on phone lines I couldn't see) and the big thing was I saw a doe poke her head onto the trail- cross and then a fawn followed her. On the way back I saw another deer, just inside the woodline, just standing there and looking at me.

I'm not anywhere near in as good of 'cycling shape' as I've been, and that ride was just right for me, and absolutely perfect on a perfect day.

Dallas, I have to say that i rode on the south end and there was barely any traffic...now that was on a monday so i am not sure how that compares to usual. I stopped so often to take pictures and just check out the sites that i burned up around 3 hours and covered very low miles...the goal was quality not quantity. But there was no congestion. At least no real traffic til i got to Big Meadows and at that point, i loaded up the bike and drove that far to walk down to the Dark Hollow Falls, which was so tourist infested....but it was pretty. The Appalachian trail portions i hiked were also on the south end and were very nice too!

Today was nearly Opposite Day.

Normally, I'm late for our 6:30 rendevous, or she's not ready.
Today, I was on time and she was ready.

Normally, it's hot already, and we spend the ride trying to avoid the sun as it gets accustomed to the sky.
Today, it was nippy, and the sun was welcome warmth. I almost rode in the other lane to keep warm.

Normally, and I mean always, we carry a tailwind on the out leg, and then fuss and moan into the wind coming home.
Today, it was a blustery wind going out, and 22mph coming back with a welcome sun and running the 12t cog.

Best way to start the day.

This evening I went for a 40 minute ride and covered 9.5 miles which is an average of just under 14 MPH. For me that's pretty fast for a ride that includes hills. I started out on the C&O Canal for the first 15 minutes, then got off the towpath at Weverton and made my way to US 340 for a little bit and then climbed up the hill on Jefferson Pike heading towards the junction with MD 17. Overall, a pretty good ride and the climb went better than I thought.

Staying in west loop for two nights, so I rode over to Grant Park and took a right at the lake. Followed trail to the end then went north to the other end and back to my start essentially riding the whole trail twice. A bit windy, but hey, it's Chicago.

This evening we took the Bilenky 650B tandem out for a quick 21+ mile ride on the C&O Canal. On the return trip we crossed the tracks to get off the gravel and rode some pavement for a few miles. When we stopped for a quick break, I took a few snapshots with the iPhone.

I rode out along Coeurdalene Lake after work today. It's about 30 miles from my door to the end of the lake and back.

Yesterday evening I met up with some guys after work to ride MTB's on the "Stinky Spoke" route in Woodinville. They were late arriving so I kept myself amused by doing 3 laps up heart attack hill. Burgers n Beer afterwards at the Redhook Brewery.

I took a beautiful early AM ride to beat the mid-day heat today. Ticked 40 miles off, and went swimming in a quarry on the way home.

Linked up about 30 miles of parks/parkways and scenic byways in Central NJ this morning (kind of an amazing thing when you consider the population density). Stopped to pick up a couple of French loaves and a peach.... the peach never made it home....

This morning I woke early and hit the road pretty early to try to beat the heat. I decided to stop at the local McDonalds and a 15 minute stop turned into a 45 minute fiasco. It seems that since the entire downtown area in Brunswick had lost power when the storms rolled through last PM, they all converged on McDonalds instead. In any case, when I left there I headed north up the valley into a bit of a headwind. When I got to Burkittsville, I dedided to get on the road that put me closer to the mountain which, though it is a bit more hilly, shielded me more effectively from the wind. There was one spot where I was unable to climb the hill and ended up pushing the bike, but otherwise I was climbing like a mountain goat for the remainder of the ride. Because of the heavy winds from the storm there was lots of debris on the road, so I was watching my lines pretty closely in the corners to ensure I didn't happen onto an unexpected surprise.

Today I left my house early (7:30 AM on Saturday is early for me) in hopes of completing my ride before the forecasted thunderstorms. I rode a loop around Portland, mostly on bike paths, almost empty in the early morning, with the last 15 miles on city roads. Explored a park I'd never seen. Met a beautiful young chow chow who looked just like my old dog. Stopped for a flat tire, and for a bratwurst at a farmers' market.

50 miles at 15.3 mph average, including lights, stop signs, dawdling through the market, and poking around the park, but not the flat and edible dog. Well, chows are edible, historically that was one of their functions, but we don't talk about that in front of them.

The Peugeot PSV is comfortable for these longer rides. The Gyes swallow-like saddle is okay - occasionally I stood to pedal for several revolutions, just for a break, but otherwise it was fine. I washed the bike when I got home. My cloth handlebar wraps are getting dark and grimy, maybe because I didn't shellac them. Turns out a spritz with Simple Green followed by one quick pass with a pressure washer makes all trace of that disappear. I'm not even sure you need the Simple Green. Who knew? The pressure washer also makes quick work of cleaning between cogs, gunky chain links, road blackened rims and even filthy tan-wall tires. I keep it away from decals, bearings, etc.

I don't do a lot of long rides, because I get pretty bored. Lately I try to do pedal stroke drills. Sometimes I think about stuff. Today I decided I want to put a small, inner, triple ring on the PSV crank. Like a 30 tooth. I'll have to use a TA "tripleizer" and drill it to match the stock look. My rear cluster only goes to 24, and my current small ring is 42. I am a decent enough climber but 42-24 is still kinda tough when the climbs get serious.

Last night I did my first real imperial century. I had come close at 97mi, 87mi, and a whole bunch of 60-70mi rides this year. But last night was a true 100mi. And the kicker is that it was done through the night. Left my town at 6pm and headed north to Portsmouth, NH for last call, and from there headed on to Wells, ME to catch the first morning train home. Carried the bike up my front steps at 8:55am.

Southpaw, that night ride looks wonderful! Wish I could have been along.

We did about 25 miles on the tandem today, Bedford to Arlington, back out to Concord, back to Bedford. It was tiring, moderately hot. Our band played a show last night and it was a toughie, took a lot out of us. So today's ride was a recovery gig, I mean a recovery ride.
