New wheels for the commuter!

Fixie!

Turns out, I was able to find the rims I wanted, Velocity Chukkers, as a fixie wheelset cheaper than to buy the rims separately and lace them to my current hubs. I figured I would take the opportunity to try a fixie for a bit, then lace in my old internal hub once I got tired of the fixie. It may have happened faster than anticipated. I dont like the fixie as much as I thought I might. I enjoy it on the mechanical simplicity level, but, the riding experience is totally different and not really my cup of tea (yet). I'll probably have the old Nexus 7 internal laced to that rear wheel within the week or so. But, its going to be hard to cut-up the rear wheel now that I have it. It is such high quality, I hate to wreck it.

thanks! i have brooks tape on my other bike but i skimped out this time and went for the fizik microtex... it looks great now but i'm not sure it will hold up as well as the brooks. the light is just a cheap $30 nirve headlight but it works fine for what it is. i might look into a dynamo hub for gadget charging purposes on my next tour

Funny thing is, I looked at the frame, stem, and fork and immediately thought, wow, nice bike! I guess I'm a retrogrouch.

Gotta wonder why more pannier companies don't do that - I hate having to dig through/unpack my pannier to find my lock when I reach my destination and then re-pack my bags after locking the bicycle...and then on the other end having to unpack my bags to fit the lock back in. Maybe I'll talk to my friend with the industrial-strength sewing machine about how to attach my own velcro loops to my panniers.

Also from MEC, called PF-2 43L. I was amazed by how much they can expand; I should never run out of space now.

Your bike looks fantastic. I'd love to see how it looks with fenders.

I'm building up a cross check that's almost embarrassingly similar, or will be once I bite the bullet and order the brooks, handlebars and handlebar tape.

Clydesdale, are you getting toe clips? I mean, you're riding a fixie. I would certainly want some sort of foot retention.

Yes, toe clips are on the list of odds and ends I'd like to add to the bike. I have been planning on toe clips for over a year now. I can never seem to get them though, because something else always takes precedence. Maybe the fixie conversion will motivate me to go ahead and get them. I am thinking velo orange.

I really like those and the yellow one's are on sale - some of the reviews mention issues with putting on non MEC racks. Opinion?

Looks like a decent lugged frame and I like the shoulders on the fork. What is it?

Edit: just saw the name on the pic. That's going to be a nice rider. Those early 80's treks are nice. Do a c&v build thread please.

They go on OK, just the standard wiggling and cursing, same as my other (small) pair. Once they're on, there's no possibility of them ever coming off accidentally, but I wish it could be a little easier...

I can't remember the name of the rack because I pulled it off my old MTB. I think it was from MEC too though.
