Had to re-register since it's been a few years since I popped in last.

Because of an artificial knee, I would like to extend my right pedal by about 20 mm.

So, I went down and got the local welder to rethread a 9/16 bolt to 20 turns to the inch, with the same treatment for two nuts welded onto the bolt. It did the trick for about 45 minutes. Now the thread in the crank is up sh1tters ditch.

Your suggestions now would be extremely welcome.

I'm having a bit of trouble imagining what you had done with the bolt and welded nuts....

What pedals are they? Seems to me there are some pedals that come with a wider stance, but spacing out most pedals by 20mm doesn't sound good to me. You can take the crank to a bicycle mechanic and he may be able to repair it with a helicoil insert (and ask his advice on options for your pedal).

1) Once you get the cranks sorted, either by having them repaired or replaced, buy yourself some purpose made pedal spacers. Look under "knee savers" on this page.

dabac beat me to it but Kneesavers are a commercial product that do just this. They come in 20mm, 25mm, and 30mm sizes. You can buy them individually or in pairs. See https://www.kneesaver.net/.

You can also buy a knockoff knee saver on ebay, in stainless steel, for $24 delivered. I have bought several from the seller. Search for pedal extenders on ebay and you will find them. Half the price of www.kneesaver.net.

Thanks, those knee savers look like the go. I'd better shell out for it and then get my crank repaired.
