Rod brake roadster tires
So The Old Gentleman has a bulge in one tire. If I buy one, I may as well buy two, eh? The challenge: Find two 28 x 1 1/2 (aka 700 x 38B) tires, shipped, for $50. Is it do-able for reasonable tires?
So far I've found:
Innova Street Riders
Schwalbe Marathons that are too expensive
Cheapo Pyramids
What deals am I missing here?

Be careful mixing 700s and 28s. I think the 28s your looking for are 635s, most 700s are actually 622s.

Make sure the tires are labeled 28x1-1/2 (635 rim), they are not the same as 700x38 (622 rim).
There are still quite a lot of choices out there ranging from $10 to $50 each. Although you will most likely have to mail order them. Realize that you are not going to be racing, nor commuting probably, on it, so there really is not much reason to go with the very high end tires.

Definately make sure you get the 28-635 that other's have mentioned. Take a look at: www.flyingpigeon-la.com. Since you'll be mail-ordering (I have not found 28" tires at any of my mainstream LBS') the selection should be pretty good. Harris Cyclery also carries a good assortment. PG.

I am not confusing 28s and 700s. If it's 700C, that's a different tire than I need. I'm talking about a 700B, i.e., the size stated above is 700 x 38B which is exactly the way it is marked on one of the tires (and yeah, it's a 635 rim according to Sheldon Brown). That said, all the tires I'm looking at use the 28 x 1 1/2 sizing anyway.
Flying Pidgeon is EX PEN SIVE.
Are Kendas any good? In my experience, few people prefer them except as cheap replacements on flipper. Has anyone ever used the Innova tires I linked to in the OP?

Kenda's are generally pretty good. You're talking about a heavy beast of a machine, so such niceties as weight and marginally improved rolling resistance are inane considerations. As long as you can live with how they look, they're fine.

Actually, they are only $21.35 right now at EveryBicycleTire.com. Has anyone bought from there? That's pretty much right at my budget point. What do they look like on a black DL-1 Tourist? Does anyone have the creme colored tires? Any pictures?

I never really worry about weight. I wonder about wear and durability.

Concerning tire size, my Tourist (DL1) came to me equipped with genuine Raleigh Roadster tires, and the sidewall says 28 x 1 1/2 ----- 40 x 635.

There was another post a while back on the everybicycletire.com. Seems like one of the complaints that popped up was them charging a credit card immediately, even if the item was out of stock or whatever.
Yellow Jersey sells bikes that use that tire size, so I assume they sell the tires.
There's an outfit that sells the Hi Wheel bikes that also sells a roadster replica, and they may have tires.
Over here in Garland, there's a "Bargain Town" where the old Kmart used to be. I was in there maybe a year ago, and they had a bunch of odd bike stuff. Cottered cranks for kid-size bikes, that kind of thing. But they had a whole stack of 28x1.5" tubes. Don't think they had any tires, and last time I was in, they had cleared all the bike stuff out. Can't imagine they sold many of those.

Creme looks okay on a Guvnor, but I'm not so sure about a 1960s roadster. Anyway, I think I will get the Schwalbes; I just have to decide on whether to be adventurous and try the creme or be safe and go with black.

I wonder how creamy that cream stays after a few miles of road dust, actually.

That helps decide it. I went with the black. For anyone that uses Flying Pigeon LA but doesn't live in California, the amount before you order looks like it charges the state sales tax, but when you do the final checkout it doesn't actually put that amount in the total.

The tires Flying Pigeon LA got here today (1 week from order to delivery.... not too bad). I'll get some pics up when I get the bike back together.

Not as obsolete as you would think. A Woods-valve tube doesn't require drilling rims. It uses the same stem dimensions as a Schrader and inflates using a presta valve head (not hard to find on eBay). Just have to make sure you carry an extra tube in your bag (which is a good idea anyway with a roadster, along with all the necessary tools). My thought is that if you've already invested the labor of getting the tire off (not to mention the money for both tires), you may as well put in fresh tubes because—believe me—it's not something you want to do again very soon. And as long as you're putting in fresh tubes, may as well go with something that's proper for a roadster. It is admittedly a small detail, but that just adds to the cool factor.

Here's a pic of my wife's 1960 Hercules with Schwalbe Delta Cruisers in cream, 26 x 1 3/8 size.
They are really pretty nice tires. We live in a steep river valley with 2nd growth redwood trees all over...the tannins from the redwood feathers stain *everything, everywhere*, but haven't significantly discolored the tires in 8 months. They're just a little , er, creamier. I wipe them down with a damp rag every so often.
Beautiful roadster you have there, Doohickie.
