1300 dollars for hardtail. Which one?
What else is out there besides the Stumpy? I don't like trek so don't bother with them. What does Kona offer? Any other smaller companies? Thanks.

Stumpjumper! I love mine and after a LOT of looking I don't think there is a better value in a race ready H/T. Kona's geometry has always been lacking in the climbing department, IMHO. I had one and going from that to the Stumpy was absolutely night and day on climbs. Some other companies with H/T's I like: Orbea (Starship... 3lbs frame...), Jamis has some nice stuff, and the high end GF's are ok but not as light as I would like in that price range.

i got 1 friend to buy a Jamis Dakota XC...
this weekend I got another one hooked onto it... boy it is one SWEEEET ride and the parts were really thought out

How much does that Orbea run for? According to the website it only weighs 20 pounds!

Sorry, I forgot to mention in my post the bike is for XC so the Roast is out, and the Matic is a full suspension bike, so thats also out.

Once you get past all the diatribe, Cannondale makes one of the THE best XC hardtails. You pay more for the frame, but as far as lightweight race bikes, Cannondale is up there as a "contender".
Giant's XTC is very lightweight and good looking.
With that said, I'm a big fan of Specialized products, so they get my vote.

Cannondale makes the best XC hardtails in my opinion. Light and fast.. I love them. Get one in whatever flavor you can afford.

I love the gary fisher bikes( i have a big sur) also love the jamis especially the steel bikes thought they may be pricier(like the dragon)
