Boston's roads when there were far fewer cars, virtually no lane markings, and no traffic lights. As evidenced, they weren't 'safe' with the absence of these features.

mtalimn : Nice route, I spent alot of time on rte. 12. I used to ride rte. 12 four days a week out from Leominster to Winchendon, I just love all the climbing out of Fitchburg. I still try to head that way home whenever i'm coming out of Fitchburg. Hope you recovered from your ride ?

Cold ride in this morning (17F wind-chill). Noticed that the city is in the process of removing the brand-new bike lanes on Main St. in Charlestown. Looks like someone figured it was tax dollars well spent.

How were Rt 117 and Rt 12?

Late in October I rode Rt 27 and Rt 119 to Peterborough. I had hoped to ride back but those late-in-the-ride hills stole away with my energy, ambition and foolishness so I begged and borrowed 3 different car rides to get back.

I gather the lanes were removed because the locals objected to not having enough input. I gather it wasn't so much they were against the lanes rather they didn't like the process. A fair amount of money was spent planning and painting so it must have been a big deal to take 'em up again.

I like bike lanes because I think they are an effective reminder to motorized brethren to share the road.

Anyone up to join me this Saturday weather permitting for my Worcester Airport ride ? I won't ride if it's raining but a far as temps goes I'm out riding in the 30's. I was looking to get anywhere between 40 or 50 miles with plenty of rollers thrown in. I was planning to start and finish in West Boylston near the old stone church at the reservoir. I'm up for a ride, if my wrist is doing better by then.

I was out testing some adjustments I'd made to my new bike this morning, so I could ride up to NH tomorrow, and I took a spill. Somebody screamed something from a car, and I stupidly looked to see who it was. My tire slid into a rut at an angle and caught the lip of if with the sidewall, and I went flipping through the air. My wrist got creamed with the full force of the impact, and I kept flipping to land on my back, grinning like an idiot.

(Unfortunately, that's not the stupidest crash I've had, either. A few years ago, I ran straight into a hydrant by the entrance to a gas station during a turn, flipped over it and flew several feet into a line of postal drop boxes, still holding the bike. I had been looking down, changing songs on my CD player! <(^_^<) The drunks across the street thought it was hilarious, and I limped home with my leg drenched in blood. hahaha)

I gotta pay better attention when I'm riding in the city...

Chain Skid Muller will have new narrow rim, 3x wheels before I'll have enough resolve to adjust to winter riding. I need a goal.

Only my third ride this month, I rode 37 moderate miles, finished in the dark. Lots of folks out riding today. I don't know about them but I'm much better at riding than omming.

I cut my ride a little short to do some stuff with the wife. I went up to the airport as planned and did George street along with some other hills for 41 miles. The weather was far better than expected and I was taking layer's off before I started climbing the airport. The bike is hanging down stairs after a quick rinse, roads very wet, and will be disassembled and cleaned better Sunday. Great to hear you were able to get out today SBP, we both did our third ride of the month, hard to get out for me during the week so I have to hope for a ride-able day or two on the weekends. That's a lot to ask for this time of year, so the weight gain season is in full bloom.

Cool. I got about 35 miles in. The weather was amazing. After the first five miles or so, I was ready to take my hoodie off and ride in a t-shirt. Tons of people out. I counted at least 25 besides myself, and I was only doing a loop through the city. A few looked like they were doing good distances (Zipp, did you happen to be decked out in red and white pro gear this morning?).
Too bad I missed riding with you. I don't have a phone, I don't really believe in them. Yeah, it's weird, I know.
I look forward to a group ride some time.

Glad to hear you got out Harutz ! I was wearing the same outfit as the photos, and the only thing different on the bike was I was running both tri-spokes not a disk on the back. I also have red and black bar tape, with red stripes on my tires, and no decals on the bike now just bare carbon.

Nobody else I saw out there was sporting fashion like that and such an expensive bike.

37 mile loop in the warm weather this afternoon and finished just as darkness fell. I do like my lights.

Pretty durn cold. Both water bottles and my front derailluer froze up during a 41 mile loop though Burnt Swamp and Diamond Hill in Cumberland, RI. I tapped the derailluer with my foot and it worked. I had been traffic forced to ride through water filled potholes and the splash froze the derailluer. The water bottles froze above the water line and they did not work. I thought about putting one inside my shirt but decided I wasn't that thirsty. Maybe I should investigate a non toxic antifreeze.

2 balaclavas, 2 layers of pants, one pair of gloves and one pair of booties. Too warm head and chest; too cold toes

I have to get some more miles in this week. Maybe I'll try boiling water & wrapping the bottle in a sock or two in my bag.
I want to bring a bag this time anyway, so I can stay warm during the beginning of the ride & be able to take things off as I go.

A little salt might help keep the water from freezing, though how much to use would take some experimentation.
