Shimano 600 FD-6400 Cable Installation
OK I give up and I'm asking for help. I've got an 85 Trek 500 frame that I'm updating with a Shimano 600 Tricolor drive train off an 89 Trek 660. It's got braze-on downtube shifters and 600 Biopace cranks. My problem is finding the correct and workable path for the front derailleur control cable. Unlike earlier Treks where there were either cable guide braze-ons on top of the bottom bracket or a plastic cable guide shell that attached to the bottom of the bb shell, this model has guide channels in the shell itself and the rear cable runs through the seatstay. I can feed the cable around the bb shell through the groove but without any cable stop or cable guide on the front derailleur the only apparent pathway to the cable clamping bolt I can see us up through and opening between the derailleur body and the chain guides but when I install the cable on this pathway--just hand tight, thank you--no amount of pulling back will allow the cage to move toward the large chainring more than 1/8". Routing the cable to the outside of the shifter body causes it to lay over the top of the springs and then angle in to the clamping bolt. Am I too stupid to see something obvious here? The shift levers are complete and properly installed as is the front derailleur. Any help or advice would be much appreciated as I'm doing this build for my son in Colorado and can have it hauled out there Sunday morning if only I've got it ready to go and this is the only obstacle to completion.

So what was on the 500 before and how was the cable routed for that?
Front derailer cables routed beneath the BB shell usually come up between the chain stays. Where is yours coming up?

Thanks for the reply Bob. It came to me as pretty much a bare frame with just the headset, a Suntour Cyclone long reach rd, bottom bracket and the cranks and chainrings. The Cyclone went into the reserve box for another build. You are correct about the cable routing; if the cable goes under the bb shell it's pretty much got to come up between the chainstays. After attaching and reattaching the cable in the two reasonable pathways to the clamp bolt I could see and getting frustrated with it not working either way, I just stopped and did something else for a while. After coming back and looking things over again I started looking at this curious little bridge between the chainstays about an inch behind the seatpost because when I first noticed it my assessment was 'oh it's got that little donut in the center, must be for a fender mounting bolt' but when I got out my cheaters and zoomed in close I could look right through the donut hole and centered in the picture was the channel for the front derailleur cable! As usual, it's the simplest things I overlook that cause me the most trouble. I've routed the cable through the donut hole and straight up to the clamp bolt and it's pulling nice and easy just like it should. I just hope that's not really a bracket for a fender mounting bolt cause I'll sure feel silly when somebody goes 'hey, why'd you run your cable through the fender bolt hole doofus?'
