Under the hour at 80

Reported in this week's Cycling Weekly (UK):

On Sep 20 08, Dennis Milsom became the first UK 80yr old to break the hour in a '25' with a 59-15. The following day he did another in 59-13.

I'm not sure whether or not I can avoid the sin of acute envy

Chapeau squared to Dennis .

Bikes: Lynskey Meraki 12 speed Di2 Ultegra and canyon Grizl AL 7

Means he rode a 25 mile time trial ( rider alone against the clock) in under 1 hour, thus averaged 25.3 mph for an hour. At age 80 thats unreal, even at much much younger ages its not shabby.

Hi atbman,

Thanks for posting that.

I HAD a goal of going under an hour for a 40K TT (a little less than 25 miles) before I turned 50. I didn't make it. I sort of got close as I did a 20K TT in ~29:50 a couple of weeks after I turned 50.

This gives me pause for a bit of hope.

Let's see: 80 years old riding 25 miles in under 60 minutes.

I could do that if I can re-arrange the numbers a bit:

52 years old riding 25 miles in under 80 minutes, if I had another 60 minutes if I needed them.

Sorry Bengeboy - useful lesson in assumption of universal knowledge of cycling-specific terms. However, I see that others have made good my communication shortcomings - thanks everyone.

However, on second reading of the article, it's clear that 59:15 wasn't a very good record - it only lasted for one day

Doing 25 miles in under an hour is considered pretty "good" at any age.

Even MORE impressive considering he was on a black bike.

Yeah, but not just any black bike..

Does it say if he did it on the road, on a track, point to point, out and back...? That's a pretty amazing feat for an 80 YO, imo.

25 mph for 1 hour... That's good as far as I'm concerned. ) According to a popular science article, it takes 8 times the effort to exceed the 25mph mark. April's issue has articles on human powere vehicles. It is worth checking out.

I hope I'm doing that well when I'm 80. If I make it. )

Well let see. In 11 years and 7 days I will be 80. Pretty sure I wont be able to match Dennis.

Ouch! Ya just can't hide natural talent. I was 23 seconds short of the hour when I was at my best about age 27 - and I used to train my arse off back then (34 years ago). But maybe there's hope for me yet. Dennis is my new hero. Cav should be jealous.

I'll pin Dennis's pic up on the wall when my Cycling Weekly arrives.

Reminds me of the late, great John Sinabaldi.

Hell, I'd be happy to avg. 25 mph f/one hour if I was going down a 10% hill for 25 miles.

Damn, I can't come close to that, and I'm only 48 years old.

Maybe I oughta work towards it. And if I do, I might reach that. No guarantees, though.

I can't go 25 mph for a minute, unless assisted by a stiff tail wind or a hill.

With rare exceptions, UK TTs are done on an out and back course, turning at a roundabout or flyover and, preferably, as flat as possible. There are also the so-called "fast" courses, done on dual carriageways (with median in US parlance) and heavy traffic - it's wonderful what effect it has on your speed when you're passed by a few 40-ton trucks. First time it happened to me my speed went up to 2mph.

There are some done on "sporting courses" which may be on a triangular sort of course, with all left turn so that there is no need to cross any line of traffic at any point.

And yes, we still measure them in miles, not kilometres - we're not Canadians, tha' knows.

And for the benefit of another poster, I'm afraid there's no picture - it's just mentioned at the end of Dr. Hutch's piece.
