yeah eff me.

so long story short, small crash, found this the day after, and turns out i blew a spoke. I wasn't going fast enough someone just happened to turn into me going at 7 mph, and i did some chainsuck damage to the chainstay. Its clear the outer layer of paint is gone. and when you look in the light, you can see the weave pattern Towards the edge of the cut yesterda, i pulled off a few tiny pieces of what could've been fiber, or dirt.

the think the chain may have scraped it on its way out of the chainring, but i don't think it cut into it. sorry low res pic is all i have but you might be able to see what do you think

ah the beauty of carbon.. 1lb weight savings but when this happens you gotta shell out yer hard earned cash for a new one! that looks pretty minor compared to the stuff i saw getting repaired at Calfee, but I wouldn't ride it for too long.. send it to calfee, prolly $100 repair.

looks superficial to me, but it's not a good pic. Take it to a shop, see what they say. I say just use some clear fingernail polish and cover it up, but you never know.

yeah it did for the most part what i thought was a scratched surface turned out to be a different light in weaving. calfee is a good option, but its too far and i'd rather not ship my bike.

anybody know of a local shop around los angeles that specializes in repair?

If I ever get a full carbon frame, I think I might be looking into ways to protect that part of the frame...wrap it in sheet metal, thick plastic, or whatever..... A little prevention goes a long way.

Right, because they are the experts in composites. Here, I'll give you the gist of how that will go..."I wouldn't ride it, have you seen our new shipment of bikes?"

Believe it or not, carbon fiber is much more damage tolerant then metals. Crack propagation in the matrix is slowed/relieved by the reinforcement. Unless the tube is literally fractured through, I wouldn't worry about it. Keep an eye on it, but don't loose sleep over it.

well i took it to a few places where i knew the mechanics, aside from telling me they can't say its a safe ride due to liability, they gave the usual rundown and suggested i send it in for repairs. i cant hear a difference with the tap test, and it looks like the top layer ran down and a few spots have fibers sticking out.

question is, should i sand it out before applying some clear nail polish

i intend to send it out to calfee once i get the money and a sub-replacement bike.

I would clean the area with some 70 or 100% ethanol, apply either clear nail polish, or even better, mix up some 2 part epoxy (resin and hardner. You can buy them at any hardware store or walmart) place in cracked area. After 8 hours of hardening, sand it flush. Paint if desired.

Do the epoxy thing, then put a chain guard sticker over it. Then forget about it.

In reality, how much force is ever on that part of the bike?

I wouldn't be worried about that. Just get one of those thingies above and don't look back down there. How many of you bike shop owners on here seen a bike crack through there, due to a chain scrape?

These things are good, but it appears it will only protect chainsuck from the top down, couldn't you still get chainsuck from the bottom up? Something is better than nothing, but doesn't appear to completely negate the risk of frame damage....poop happens.

i got one but it won't go down low enough on the fat seat tube/bb lug. and the chainstay protector won't go far enough forward to protect against chain suck. so i'm a bit paranoid something bad will happen any time.
