can someone help a newbie with a cassette

my cassette turns and the wheel doesn't!
i was cycling and there was a loud bang and now the cassette turns without the wheel turning
is this a quick fix or am i going to have to dip into my wallet to repair this

It sounds like the freehub body ratchets have failed. Given the nature of the failure ("...a loud bang.....") it appears to more than minor sticking pawls which can be fixed by dripping in some lube. I'm pretty sure you need a new freehub body.

If it's a common hub, like a Shimano, the body can be replaced at reasonable cost.

Try a bike shop. The replacement body may be available and you pretty much replace, not repair these things. It sounds like yours is pretty fragged inside so repairs aren't likely anyway.
