That news is too bad. I have nothing against frames from Asia, but it is sad to hear about people losing their jobs.

How much of their mountain bike line was being built here?

Well...that's the last time I buy a dang Cannondale!

I actually had looked favorably on the Perp, Prophet, Gemini, and Judge.

I have nothing against Asian frames either...heck man, my Cannondale Super V 900 Comp was the BizzNizz! I really liked it. Maybe they'll come to their senses.

According to the Bicycle Retailer article, it sounds like between 2006 and 2008 just the entry level aluminum bikes were being made overseas. Not sure if Dorel upped that when they took over or not.

Gemini seemed to be quite a bike and won a lot of races. Saw quite a few around here for a while.

Too bad, would have been nice if they could have got a bail-out.

But on the "real", will continue to dive deeper into recession. Now, those guys can't afford to finance jack squat. I lost a good job about six years ago( (along with 700 other people) on a simular situation, and it's not been the same since. The company moved to Montery Mexico, while the CEO pulled in a 105 mil. that year.

This blows! That plant is 40 miles from my front door. 10 minutes from my favorite bike shop. I don't own a Cannondale but this really is going to hurt things in the area, especially that shop.

I have been riding Cannondales for more than 20 years. This news is sad, kind of reminds me of the day that I heard that Trek was dropping the Klein line of bikes. Bummer.

Yeah, I'm curious to know how many of you lamenting the loss currently own a Made-in-the-USA Cannondale and how long ago you bought it.

The comment from JonnyV above speaks volumes.

Two, but from the mid 90s. Both roadies. Just sold the third a month ago.

This shutdown was predicted when Dorel purchased them. In a buyout, the firm usually waits about a year to make their move as to which plants will go. It's sad, but predictable. I don't know how much longer we can have any decent economy without manufacturing goods for export.

I don't, but I grew up in Pennsylvania and went to college in Central PA, so for years, I thought they were the bike to have. I wanted a Jekyll, and later a Prophet...just never had the money to get one (until I was out of PA and the Cannondale lust had faded a bit). I know a guy who works at the Bedford plant. Whether you own one or not, it's still a sad thing.

I think a better question is how many of you lamenting the loss live in the US...probably most. roccobike made a good point regarding the economy that was a little bigger picture than defending some product you would have liked to own.

I still like Asian frames though

Meh. I hear the same thing from people who want to support the local LBS but always end up doing their big purchases via the web. It's nice to talk the talk but walk the walk, too. I know there are some that truly want to support local and Made-in-your-home-country but that is a minority.

That being said, I happen to own an honest to goodness Made in the USA bike and 2 from Taiwan.

Eh, I actually ride one of the last Colorado-made aluminum AS-R's, and I bought it at a local shop, but I don't see why that matters. I drive a Toyota (which may or may not have been made in America really), but obviously it's not an "American car," but I still feel bad for the people in Detroit who lost their jobs. I got a good deal on the Toyota, it's great on gas, and it's supposed to be a reliable, quality car, so I bought it over a Ford/GM/Chrysler (whose ratings are often less than stellar). Yet I can still recognize that American auto companies failing is a bad thing, and it's not like I don't care about American layoffs, and I do hope that they can recover, if just for the sake of the Michiganders who are suffering from job loss (even though, yes, I realize that by buying a Toyota, I've contributed to the problem).

With Cannondale, even though I don't own one, it hits a little closer to home, since I lived so close to Bedford (and therefore grew up in the hotbed of C'dale worship). So many C'dale owners are proud of their American frames from an American company (in fact, I was talking to one about how I bought a "discounted" '07 AS-R for the same price as the new '08 AS-R's where going for, and said I didn't understand why the newer, lighter, stiffer ones were cheaper. I then guessed that the price drop might have been because they had moved production to Taiwan, and he had told me to take pride in the fact that I was riding an American frame).

Meh indeed. If a business can't be competitive, it needs to change or it will die. It's cheaper to build the frames elsewhere, so why not do it?
